So I was talking to someone today about how I was planning on concentrating in finance at CSOM and he told me that he felt I’d be pigeon-holing myself by doing that and that I’d be better of with one of the more general management degrees. I do respect his opinion because he is the regional manager of a certain business so he does know what he’s talking about. What do you guys think? Would something other than finance be better? I know I have a while to decide, but I’d just like to know if finance would be a good idea for me or not.

You’ll have to take the CSOM core so you won’t be getting pigeon-holed anyway. Your degree will be a bachelor’s in management and you’d have a concentration in finance (or whatever). A general management concentration may look like “jack of all trades, master of none”. Very few CSOM students have that for a concentration.

As far as whether finance would be a good fit for you or not, it’s very early to say. Take the intro course in the spring of your sophomore year. If you like it and do well in it, go for it. If not, you’ve got plenty of time to do other things.

Good luck to you!

As a parent (and an employer), I agree. If you like Finance, go in that direction. If you like Marketing, do that. If you want the highest opportunity to score a job, add Accounting.

Thank you both very much. I wasn’t sure what a management concentration would actually do for me and I’ve heard great things about BC Finance, so that’s probably the direction I’ll be going in
