financial aid 10% rule

so it says that you are expecetd to pay 10% of familys income if >60k. so if my parents make 120k, then my tuittion is 12k/year. does that include room/board or does that 12k become 22k?

Don’t automatically assume the 10% rule applies to you. If you have substantial assets, you’ll pay full freight even though household income is 120K.

are you serious?!! because the website says around 10% for over 100k

i think my parents make ball park 150k but arent willing to spend more than 20k per year on college which sucks so i need to know

also does that 10% rule include room/board?

My family’s income is over 60K, we have normal assets (maybe a little less than normal) and that 10% rule applied to us. It’s 10% including everything.

Read the policy carefully. Your family could very well fall into the 10% rule or it could very well not. For instance, ifyou live in a low cost of living area and your parents have consistently banked much of their income or if your parents bought a house in an area where housing prices have skyrocked since they bought your house on the cheap, their assets might be too high for the 10% rule to apply. Small business owners also have a lot harder time getting FA because of the way their assets are considered.

brown14: the 10% rule covers the entire cost of one year, roughly $50K. (this assumes room, board, tuition, books & travel) Assuming your family assets are normal and income is $100k, your parents’ contribution would roughly be $10k. You would also be assumed to contribute about another $2800 each year towards the entire cost too. This is easily covered by student employment (avg 7 hrs/week) during the year. Since the $50K includes items like books and travel, what amount your parents actually write on their check to Yale might even be less than $10K.
