Financial Aid 2016

Today when I looked on my portal it said that I was offered a $2,000 CPS Outreach Scholarship. Other than that, there are no other scholarships listed. Does this mean that is all the money I will receive, or is there more to come?

Are you in-state or OOS?

I’m OOS

Since you are OOS, the scholarship may be the only FA you will receive from SLO. The Cal States are public universities, so the best FA is given to in-state students in the way of Cal Grants. Cal States do give merit aid such as the scholarship you received, but not enough to cover all expenses. OOS students are expected to be close to full pay.

Since you are OOS, you do not qualify for a Cal Grant, however, if you are low income you can qualify for Federal Funds such as the Pell Grant. Also you are eligible for Federal student loans of up to $27K/4 years and your parents could qualify for a Parent Plus loan to help with costs. I would wait for the FA package, but do not be too surprised if you are expected to pay the majority of costs to attend.

@Gumbymom Okay thanks for the help! I really hope I will received at least a little more; all of my college choices are OOS so they’re pretty pricey $$$

Did you run the net price calculator for SLO? This will give you an estimate of costs not including any merit aid.

@dweaver16, run the numbers for every school you’re considering. Poly is a VERY good deal for OOS students even without aid. My son’s cost of attendance at Poly where he received the scholarship you did, $8k over 4 years was about the same as it would have been at Case Western where he was awarded $100k. It’s not the award that matters, it’s the net cost. Remember too, this is prior to any need based FA. Good luck.
