Financial aid: a few questions

Hi,
I'm going to be a senior in high school this fall. My stepfather makes about 80,000ish/year. and my mom makes pretty much nothing because she doesnt work. So, i have like a few questions to ask.
1. do i have to include my stepdad in FAFSA form ? (well,my actual dad lives out of country, and he never responsible for me, we dont contact him either)

When should i start filling FAFSA and when should i suppose to submit it ?

Do you think i have any chance to get a financial aid for college(tuition cost:9,600 ish a year) or a loans that i can pay off by myself when i finish my undergrad school ?

well, mystepdad has high income but he also has a huge debts, like his credit cards, our house, his real 3 children's college debts which is from 10 years ago and etc.

If my mom get a job now, will it affect my chance ? will i get less loan money ?

im the only child btw, if not includes my step sisters. :P

that's pretty much all of the questions i can think of right now. will ask more later
thank you very much ! i really appreciate it.

;)

Yes, you do have to include your stepdad on FAFSA. It will ask for the income and assets of your Mom and her husband. For FAFSA, your stepdad is treated the same as a birthparent.

The earliest you can submit FAFSA for the 2012-2013 school year is January 1st 2012.

Debt is not taken into account by FAFSA. If your stepsisteres are grown up and not living at home anymore, they are not reported on FAFSA and will have no effect on your FAFSA.

Your family income is probably too high for federal grant aid. But, all students that are eligible to file, and actually file, FAFSA are eligible for federal direct loans. Your Mom getting a job would not effect your eligibility for federal loans though it may make a diffference to how much is subsidized (though possible not as your Stapdad’s income is quite high). The maximum direct loan for a freshman is $5500 for the school year, of which up to $3500 can be subsidized if there is financial need (as determined by the school). Any other loans would have to be parent PLUS loans (taken out by your parents) or private loans that would require a cosigner.

I’m going to be a senior in high school this fall. My stepfather makes about 80,000ish/year. and my mom makes pretty much nothing because she doesnt work. So, i have like a few questions to ask.

I’m assuming you live with your mom and she is married to your stepdad. YES you do have to include his income on the FAFSA (and the Profile if you have to complete one of those). No exceptions…he is PART of your family.

It will be available to be filled out on January 1, 2012. Complete and submit as soon as possible using VERY accurate estimates…then do 2011 taxes ASAP and update.

It all depends on the college and it’s financial aid policies. Your family income is too high to qualify for federally funded grants (Pell).

Debts do NOT factor into the financial aid formula at all. AND your primary residence isn’t even mentioned on the FAFSA in any way.

Any income your mom earns will be added to your family income…so yes, it is likely this will reduce your aid. BUT your mom’s income might help you PAY for college…that’s what our family did…the mom’s income paid for college costs. It’s not a bad thing.

OMG i’m freaking out now, where am i gonna find money for college ? help me guys !! please
my stepdad has so much debt and it has a big affect on our daily life. we’re planning to sell the condo that we’re living in right now after i graduate from high school and rent apartment for me but today’s economy kinda sucks i think it probably gonna take awhile.
my dad currently pay $3000/month condo debt right now.

Will the FAFSA thing affect the chance of me getting scholarships too???

talking about PLUS loans, do i have to cosign ? can i pay it off later when i graduate from college ?
I have a good grades, test scores and everything but i dont want money problems to affect me on colleges and stuff. :frowning:

can I just report my mom ? but not my dad ? my dad’s address in is in our house in OH, but he himself living in apartment in TN. can he move his address to there so my household income will only count my mom ?
OMG I scare that i wont get any scholarships, loans or like nothing.

On FAFSA, you report the parent you live with and their spouse. You live with your Mom and stepdad, so you must report them. Not reporting your stepdad would be fraud.

If you have high enough stats to qualify for merit scholarships, many colleges have merit money that does not take need into account. To be eligible for merit money at a college you generally need to be in the top (percentage wise) of their students - high GPA/ACT/SAT etc compared to the average for that college.

PLUS loans are parent loans. They are taken out by the parent and are the responsibility of the parent, not the student.

Do you have high stats?

If so, then you can get merit scholarships.

Your stepdad’s income will count…and it will affect the aid that you get.

You need to talk to your parents and start building a college budget. How much can they afford to contribute? Can you work part-time and put those earnings toward your school expenses (books, food, etc.?)

Look at your state schools first. They will be your most affordable option, unless your stats are high enough to draw significant merit from a private or OOS public.

From another thread…

*My mom said she has some money save up for me around 20K in case.

idk if that will last for 4 yrs college. OSU tuition is 9000ish so hopefully i get morrill scholarship thingy.*

I want to apply to: Ohio State University
Academics
Rank: 65/360
ACT: 25 (first time, taking it again soon)
GPA: 4.0 weighted/ 3.85 unweighted (last time i checked)
Want to major in BIOLOGY

are you planning to live on campus? what’s the full COA for you (tuition, housing and board, books. etc.)

Retake that ACT and try the SAT too…try to improve on that score…you are in the range for the Morrill but I don’t see that this is a guaranteed award…perhaps someone else can find that info.

Print out the FAFSA formula, and work through it on paper with your parents using their current financial information. http://www.ifap.ed.gov/efcformulaguide/attachments/101310EFCFormulaGuide1112.pdf</a> The formula does change a bit every year, but this will give all of you a much better sense of what your situation will look like next spring.
