I know that by living off campus, you’ll get less financial aid. But how much less?? If you live off campus, and provide your rent costs and what not to the financial aid office do they adjust your aid accord to how much your rent is?

Also, a question to transfer students who have already reported that they’re gonna be living off campus. How much aid are you currently offered? and what did you report as your income? Thanks!

I’m a transfer student living off campus and I received enough financial aid to cover everything excluding housing, which I have to pay for on my own. This quarter I was offered around $5k, which was enough to cover tuition expenses, and was disbursed $435, which I used to buy books off of Amazon for my classes as well as other necessary personal expenses like groceries.

@soweird, I’m curious about this as well. Currently, UCD is offering me 6800, but I’m not sure how much they will offer me if I choose off campus.

@bhav007 so i spoke to many different people at the financial aid office and they all said the aid is usually reduced by 3k-7k if you live off campus! it sucks. I’m not sure how it would work in your case since you’re getting 6.8k. you should definitely call and ask!

@soweird, I already called before, and the lady said I must fill in the “Request in change in aid” or something on the UC Davis financial aid page. She can’t give me any numbers or estimates.

I already signed up for the on-campus housing (did the 500 dollar deposit, but we have till June 30th to cancel and get full refund), so now maybe I should do the change in aid form and see how much gets reduced?

I mean, it’s not like doing to change in aid form will somehow automatically cancel my housing application right?

@bhav007 dude, sorry i just saw this! so what happened? did they cancel your application? and was the difference in aid a lot?

Well, what happened with me last year was that I put off-campus housing on my FAFSA, then ended up in student housing apartments (which of course cost a lot more than a typical apartment). Initially my financial aid was packaged as if I was in a typical off-campus apartment, but then once the costs for the student housing apartment were billed my aid increased by a few thousand to pay for the difference. So I had the opposite situation (if I read right) and that’s how it worked out for me. I’m guessing if you were to cancel your on-campus housing they’d reduce aid appropriately.

As far as off campus housing and financial aid, this coming quarter I’m getting enough refunded to me to pay for books, food, and some towards rent. I’ll probably be paying most of my rent out of pocket, but pretty much everything but housing is paid for.

oh okay that’s expected. I wanted to student housing only because i thought aid would be a lot more but if its a few thousand im definitely opting out next year. Thanks!! @PhantomVirgo
