My school sent me my financial aid and all I received were loans which I expected because my family income is middle class. But I was wondering if this includes scholarships because it says these are your financial aid awards. So do you think I will be contacted separately for scholarships because I expected at least a small scholarship. Also would work study show up as a financial aid award because I didn't see that and I was really hoping for it.

Work study is part of financial aid and would appear as part of an aid award.

Scholarship notification would depend on the school’s policy. At my daughter’s school scholarships are often awarded at around the time of acceptance and students are notified of them before need based aid is determined. But they are usually also listed within the FA award as they form part of the whole FA package. It is not impossible that your school awards scholarships later.

Thanks I sure hope so cuz without a scholarship or work study I may be in a bit of a hole next year. A pretty sizable one.

It is unlikely you are going to get WS if it was not included in you award. To be honest I would expect scholarships to be included but, as I said above, it is not impossible there is more to come especially if your stats are high and you are in line for some competitive ones that have not been announced yet.

If money is an issue you should ask the school is your aid includes all awards you are going to receive. If so, do you have any more affordable options?

Yeah I did pretty well in high school and according to the stats for the general academic scholarship I am well qualified for it which is what leads me to wonder that it comes later. My school is already in state and the only cheaper in state options are small LACs and I plan to major in engineering so this really is my cheapest option besides to going to CC for 2 years and transferring which I am contemplating but I’d much rather not do it.

You really don’t need to get work-study. That’s just a job. If you need the money, then just get a job off campus at a local restaurant, store, etc.

Work study money is paid out incrementally anyway, so the money isn’t really for regular school costs…it’s really for daily spending/expenses.

There are usually some non-work study jobs on campus as well. My kids were hired as university tutors. Those jobs are not work study jobs.

Since your EFC is too high for free aid anyway, then a non-work study job isn’t going to hurt your EFC anyway.

You probably didn’t get work-study because your EFC is highish. School often reserve their work study for those with lowish EFCs.

You can also work this summer and put those earnings towards your college costs.

What school is this? Do they typically give scholarships?

Are your test scores within the top 10-15% of the school (are your test scores well into the top quartile)?

Have you talked to your parents about how much they will contribute?

You need to talk to a financial aid counselor directly. Things differ from to school to school as to how they do things. In my last son’s experience, he got his merit awards later rather than earlier. He did not qualify for financial aid so I don’t know if the awards would have be integrated or awarded separately. Ask the financial aid office about work study eligibility and any aid that might yet be forthcoming. Also ask if they know how merit awards at that college are distributed and if they have been given yet. If they do not know, find out where to call (maybe admissions) and find out if there is any possibility that you can get a merit award as well. Also ask financial aid how a merit award would affect the financial aid that you have been awarded.

Ya I’m well inside the top 10-15% for Colorado state but my sister received WS with the same EfC at Mesa st. College. I think what I’ll do is work as a youth league referee in my college town cuz I umpired the last summer in my home town and it’s pretty much guaranteed with decent pay, probably more than the 3,000 dollars WS caps at anyways.

You can’t compare work study awards at one school with those at another. Much depends on the make up of the student body, the pool of CWS funding the school has, how many students who are awarded CWS actually work (fewer who do mean more who will be awarded - because many won’t work), etc. Umping sounds like a great college job.

Is the scholarship one that is guaranteed based on a certain combination of grades/scores? If so, it should be on your award letter. If it is one that is not automatically awarded based on grades/scores, it is possible these awards may still be forthcoming … but it wouldn’t hurt to call & ask.

They arent guaranteed by scores. But my scores and grades seem to be above their average grades for the award which is why I’m hoping they come later. But ya im gonna call and ask tomorrow.
