What is the deadline to submit financial aid forms if applying for the Emory Scholar Program, but not ED? I thought it was still November 1, but I cannot confirm.

NewJerseyMom,

This is a question that seems to come up frequently, and it’s a good one.

First, good luck to your son/daughter regarding Emory Scholars Program. As you know by now, you will need to have your applications for ESP, along with the application for Admission, submitted by the Nov. 1 deadline. Both of these applications are initially processed through the Office of Admission. If your son/daughter is named as a semi-finalist for ESP (notification is late January), the second-round of review for determining finalists for ESP is then done by the Emory Scholars Program Committee.

For need-based financial aid, you will find that Emory’s website for their Office of Financial Aid is generally informative. (The website was revamped entirely from a year ago, and it now provides much more information, such as what to do, deadlines, etc.) Reference: http://www.emory.edu/FINANCIAL_AID/undergraduates/emory-college/how-to-apply.php

Now, to answer your question… the deadline to submit financial aid forms for a student applying for ESP via Regular Decision is March 1, notwithstanding the Nov. 1 deadline for submission of ESP and Admission applications. It will help you and will help the Office of Financial Aid to get all your documentation submitted as early as you can – meaning late January to early February. If you know or can accurately estimate your income for this year (2007) sometime in early January, without the need for your employer’s W-2 Form, then go ahead and register for CSS PROFILE and for FAFSA as early as you can in January, 2008 (which is when the 2008-09 FAFSA becomes available). Each of these online forms are extensive and require a lot of financial information, both for the student (if s/he is employed, even part-time) and for the parent(s), including “non-custodial” parent if applicable.

You will need to submit the following to Emory:

CSS PROFILE (Link: https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/index.jsp )

FAFSA (Note that the 2008-09 form is not available until January; Link: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ )

Copies of Federal Tax Return, along with W-2 Forms, for both Student and Parent(s)

The earlier you do all this, the better to allow the Office of Financial Aid to put together a Financial Aid package for your son/daughter. If your son/daughter is offered a Merit scholarship via ESP, s/he will still be eligible for potential need-based financial aid, up to the limits of the COA (Cost of Attendance). In other words, the amount of the Merit scholarship will be deducted from the determination of need-based aid such as grant money. The Emory grant amount can slide up or down, depending on total scholarship funds available.

Because each student’s financial circumstances can vary, don’t hesitate to directly contact the Financial Aid advisor who will be assigned to your son/daughter. You can reach the Office of Financial Aid at (404) 727-6039. Good luck!
