Hey guys, I'm thinking about appealing my financial aid but don't know if it's too late. I got my financial aid packet around April 28 or so, and it was disappointing to say the least. Because I had two days to confirm enrollment I did so but now there's still the problem of payment: it'll be hard on my family to pay the EFC and such. Is it so late that if I turn in my financial aid reevaluation form they'll barely consider it?

It doesn’t hurt to try. Just be sure to emphasize that you received your package only a week or so ago, right before the deadline to accept the offer of admission.

Do you think I should have any legitimate expectation for a different award even though our financial situation isn’t any different?

An appeal is always based on the same financial info. Asking for a new award based on changed circumstances is something different.

If the current award will really place a burden on your family such that you may not be able to attend Penn, you should make that clear to them. Again, you have nothing to lose.

I also received my financial aid the day before May 1st and accepted it because its my first choice. However, I, too, have problems with affording this education. My EFC on the FAFSA was under $300 but Penn is asking me to pay over $8000/yr, which is MUCH MUCH more than I was expecting. I submitted an application for reevaluation 2 weeks ago and have yet to receive a response. However, I know that June 1st is the date to submit a room deposit, and I was wondering if I should go ahead and say no to Penn and attend Hampton, which is my next choice, or wait for the reevaluation and hope for the best? I have 2 days so quick responses would be VERY HELPFUL!!! Thanks in advance!!!

I’ve appealed but nothing changed. I’m getting 20k in FA a year…which means my family has to shoulder 40k+ a year.

I’m over the 120k income range but we have a lot of dependents and the cost of living in Canada is so much higher than America.

:S best of luck to you!

Simplyme: I would CALL THEM. If you need an answer fast just call them and explain that this is seriously THE deciding factor for where you attend next year so they need to hurry up. Also, 5500 of that 8000 could be covered by a federal loan each year, leaving only 2500 bucks.

Wait, what room deposit? I dont see anything like that on the freshman checklists…

Thanks. I just got off the phone with them and they finished my reevaluation yesterday. What I don’t understand is why the student contribution is so high at $2500, especially when I have not had a job, pay no taxes, or have any income whatsoever. But my parental contribution came down from $6000 to $3200 but I’m still not sure if that is enough. I’m hoping so. But thanks for your help.

Summer job and/or work study? They actually ask for expected summer income in the Penn financial supplement. I guess if you don’t put anything down, they might put a default number in for you.

If you have a serious financial problem in your family, it’s not too late. They look at financial aid throughout the year. However, you’ll want to act as soon as possible.

If my mother retires, it is possible that my financial aid will increase, correct?
