i was accepted to nyu stern but my financial package is a little too expensive for my family. I got a few offers from different schools like macaulay honors baruch (no tuition for 4 years plus other perks), umich ($15K a yr), and binghamton (3K per year). I'm planning on writing a financial aid appeal letter to nyu and personally drop it off at the financial office (i live in ny). Should i include the financial package letters from the other schools in addition to my letter to prove my claims? Also, i realize that these schools are not quite up to par to nyu stern, and that i can't really compare their academic calibers. Should i still include them?

Also, does NYU tend to match offers from other schools? I'm not asking them to match them perfectly- just give me a bit more money. NYU stern is my top school, but i really can't afford to go if i dont get some more money.

On a side note, is it too late to request for some more financial aid? I know that nyu doesn't really tend to give out more money, so i didn't think of writing a letter until someone i knew got a bit more money. Thanks so much.

It doesn’t hurt to ask for more financial aid, but NYU is unlikely to match any other offers. Just ask nicely, and yes I would include what other schools offered. I have seen and read appeals where they would give you 1000 or 2000 more.

apply or repeal for more financial aid anyway. better than doing NOTHING and not trying. you don’t have to rely on financial aid, there’s many external scholarships too. check them out on collegeboard’s website.

I don’t NYU matches financial aid offers from other schools. binghamton and cuny are subsidized by the govt but nyu is private and relies on tuition. Macaulay honors baruch isnt that bad, still in nyc with all the opportunities and has a good business program.

I am also going to appeal…My EFC is 25000 but my mom and stepdad have been separated since june, and me my mom and brother moved out. We have documentation proving that we lived off only my moms income but when i filled the FAFSA my parents where plannin on getting back togther, plus i was lead to beleive that only actual divorces can lead to changing fafsa info…as of now we are still living apart, but they have just signed to buy a house together…is it worth it too appeal?

Their FA office specifically told me that they do not match the offers of other schools. Also, the woman I spoke with said that NYU has never given more than 5K in appeals. When I called, they ended up giving me 2K more (this is the amount I have heard MANY kids appealing getting)

They gave me another 2k (chancellors grant or something) after my mom called, but its still not enough. I just sent a formal letter with supporting documentation and am hoping they’ll give me a lot more.
So far, all I’m getting is 5,500 in “free” money
This vs. 12,500 at GW.

I just told them that Johns Hopkins was giving me more money. They said that while they can’t officially match that offer, they can give me 2K more per year,

Well I just called and the woman I spoke with submitted an online appeal form on my behalf. Like you I just told her about the other schools I was accepted to and the scholarships they gave me. She said that I would be contacted in one to two business days so hopefully this means a potential gain of 1-2K a year.

Yeah I sent in an appeal, and NYU just called me and offered an additional 1500/year. Not much since my EFC dropped from 25,000/year to 12,000/year, but I think with a little bit of struggle I should still be able to handle NYU. Just waiting for USC now.

Hi! I was wondering if someone could tell me how to appeal for more money. I’ve been accepted to Stern, but the price tag that comes with it is a bit too much for my family. The only other school I’m considering is my state school, which is giving me the same amount in scholarship, but the overall total price is much less, being a state school. The other schools I’ve been accepted to aren’t giving me more than NYU, and was wondering if my situation would allow for an appeal, and if so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks so much!

Sorry, I forgot to add that my dad could be losing his job in 3 months, so do I have to wait till then to tell them about a change in the financial situation?

call or e-mail the financial aid office with your NYU ID # (ie. N24324214). write a letter may help but mail is SLOW. NYU will definitely take in consideration your dad will lose his job in 3 months. FAFSA definitely wont show that since it’s based on past/present income rather than expected future income.

I mean it’s a tough call. I’m obviously going to get another job that’s beyond work study and any possible internships but I really don’t know how much that will help. I figure if I work, defer all my loans for four years and just save the majority of the money I make I should be fine. Of course my parents are paying their fair share too so idk.

Wow, this seems like a tough decision. Based on my experience, I would say…you could go to NYU…but would you fully enjoy it with all that debt looming over your head? Or could you go to a reasonably respected school and enjoy it to the fullest with relatively less or no debt, do well, and apply to NYU grad or any other college?
