Has anyone successfully appealed their financial aid offer? If so, was it a significant change? I'm asking because I'm planning on transferring to Cornell in the fall but just received my financial aid. They expect my parents to pay $20,000 a year (after my $14,000 a year outside scholarship and NYS tuition). Vanderbilt, on the other hand, gave me a completely free ride (all grants, no scholarships) so I really don't understand where Cornell is getting their numbers...should I use Vanderbilt's financial aid offer in my appeal?

Yes. Although I suspect that Vanderbilt actually gave you a merit-based scholarship.

It’s actually a “Vanderbilt Need-Based Grant” … which is why I find it odd that Vanderbilt gave me about $40,000 on top of my $14,000 outside scholarship whereas Cornell gave me essentially nothing…

If it’s truly ‘need based’ Cornell should match it.

i appealed to no avail but my friend appealed and had his dad go in the office and basically be like “listen if i dont get money i have to sell our house to get my child through college, that isnt right” and he got an extra 18,000 dollars.
