Financial Aid Appeals and Negotiations

Could everyone who tried appealing and renegotiating their financial aid award please post what you tried to do/say/tell SFAS, what additional circumstances you told about, how you went about it (met with them physically/called/emailed), and whether/how much you succeeded. Do you have to cite additional circumstances to succeed in appeal, or could showing competing Ivy League aid offers with lower Parental Contributions produce results? What do you think? What have you experience.

Thanks in advance for responding.

bump...oh come on...there's gotta be more people that tried doing it...please help!

well, my Brown aid offer was several thousands less than what Yale gave me. When I called the Brown aid office, they specifically told me to send them Yale's offer. So I'm sure that Yale would also consider other schools' offers, as long as they were only need-based.

I should know within next week if I succeeded in getting any additional aid, and I'll let you know.

Thanks - asterstar - I hope so...

Hmm, do you think Yale would try to match Wellesley's offer? I haven't gotten the Yale offer yet, but so far, it is: Wellesley (the best), Princeton, Harvard, Brown (the worst). The difference between Wellesley and Brown is 3,000 dollars.

Well, it doesn't really matter. Yale's offer will probably be similar to Harvard's, and even if it's like Brown's, 12,000 dollars difference total isn't too bad since I have forever to pay it.

I'm in a weird situation: Yale and most other schools gave me 0 need based aid, but Pomona gave me 20k need based, based on the same info. Is there any chance Yale might give me some

Iki, don't know if they'll react to Pomona's offer. Now if you're talking HP, (the Yale folks know Harvard, for instance, sweetens offers with some pro forma stuff designed to disguise what is essentially financial aid sleight of hand) they'll play ball.
