OO You're joking. runs away to do it I thought.... XX it started Jan 1.... Omg.

thank god i found this - sending it tomorrow i suppose

=) Be quick! It takes a long time to do--getting the forms and stuff.

what? tax returns too?!

Yah! W-2 and 1040! READ =)

ah crap. i sent the form in.. do you think the tax returns will get lost if i send those in tomorrow separate from the fin aid app?

Hi guys -

We are also in a bit of panic finishing this up (and discussing a bit at the parents forum).

To the Cornell FA app, you need to attach the 2004 tax returns and schedules including copies of W-2s and/or 1099s. The 2005 tax returns will go later with the CSS and FAFSA. Cornell deadline for CSS/FAFSA is 2/10.

There is some confusion with the requirements for self employed parents. Instructions state a Business/Farm Supplement is required for these parents; but the only form available is for the 2006-2007 school year and requires a completed 2005 tax return. Therefore, we are NOT submitting the BUFS with the Cornell FA app and 2004 info. Not sure if this will be acceptable, but I'm calling Cornell on Monday for clarification.

You can download copies of all forms at the financial aid page at cornell.edu.

Well, I looked up on their web site just now, and it says

If the 2005 tax return is not available, families should send the 2004 return. The financial aid application will not be considered complete until we have tax data for both the parents and the student.

I hope my parents have at least their '04 return available!

2005 tax returns are not usually filed until Spring of 2006, so at this time, no one should have a 2005 tax return available. Most schools just require the 2005 tax return along with the CSS Profile and FAFSA and they ask for them to be filed as soon as available after Jan 1, 2006. Some schools with deadlines will allow the 2004 tax return to stand in place of the 2005 return, but I think the circumstances have to be unusual and prohibit completion of the 2005 tax return by the deadline date. And some schools, like Cornell, want to see the 2004 tax return with their own FA app now, and the 2005 tax return with the CSS/FAFSA as soon as available.

The reasons to rush to complete 2005 tax returns and FAFSA/CSS are basically to meet school deadlines, but more importantly because federal money is first come first served. The sooner you submit, the greater your chances are to receive certain federal dollars.

Ah, I just talked with my mom, and we're getting through it, slowly and painfully.

Well, for the BUFS (Business/Farm Supplement), would it be bad if we put down estimates for 2005, and then maybe call or resubmit once we get final numbers?

Also, what is the 2006 estimate? Both my mother and I are confused on this one...

Since the BUFS is a 2006-2007 form, I'm not even attempting it until our 2005 tax return is completed later this month. I can only reasonably fill out the 2004 info on the first page and the rest would be such a guess, I'm uncomfortable. (Ha...I'm an auditor...I like numbers to be exact. :-)

Yes, they want the 2004 Tax papers (1040, and W-2s) and you will send them the 2005 Tax papers later with the CSS Profile which is due to be filled by Feb. 10th along with the FAFSA. So, you only need that one piece Cornell paper and the 2004 Tax papers due by the 1st.

I don't have my W-2 forms!!! I only have th 1040s. Can I send the W-2 on tuesday?

If you don't have a copy of the W-2 and/or 2004 Tax Return -- just include a letter stating why. They said that would be acceptable. We ran into this problem ourselved. But you HAVE to include a letter.

On page 2 where the parents fill it out, it addresses only one parent. One of my parents owns a business and is self employed but the other one has a job at a company. Who fills it out and signs?

OMG, I'm so screwed!!! I didn't know that finaid is due on the first also until I saw this thread :( The post office closed at 4pm today, missed it. So I won't be able to get it post dated by Jan 1st. Will they mind one day late or they'll just throw away my application?

If parents are separated and I'm under one parent's custody, do I only send in the tax returns of the custodial parent?

Also, since I have the Canadian tax forms, I don't have a W2 or any of that, do I just leave those sections blank?

I think the parent with whom you live signs the form. Actually, I am almost positive that is the case.

You're screwed G! They're going to look, see the Jan 2nd postmark date and toss you in that bottomless REJECT pile :p

Nah, they understand Jan 1st is a Sunday and the post office isn't open tomorrow, it's fine
