Longer answer (from UC website - for out-of-state students):

UC will help you receive any federal financial aid for which you are eligible, but very limited UC financial aid is available to help cover the cost of your education.

Short answer is no institutional aid. There is a regents scholarship or something like that but it’s a drop in the bucket towards OOS costs. And it’s highly competitive and not guaranteed.

OOS students should plan on being full pay at public universities in CA. Yes, they can get the federally funded Pell Grant and Direct Loan, but they would need to pick up the rest of the cost themselves.

As stated by several posters, the UC’s and Cal States offer no need based financial aid to OOS students except for any Federal aid a student is eligible.

UC Regents, Chancellor and Dean’s scholarships are competitive merit based aid that OOS students are eligible but the amounts vary between campuses from $2000/year to $13000/year which are small amounts in comparison to the $67K/ year price tag.

The Cal states have even more limited merit based scholarships than the UC’s and usually require students to apply after they are admitted.

The very definition of a state school.

I thought as much. Thanks so much to all of you!

You’re welcome. I meant to add that it’s almost nice to see certain states somewhat “take care of their own.” Florida is another example. The admissions reps for University of Central Florida (UCF) really made it seem like you barely needed an in-state G.E.D.*** to gain entrance to the university, but OOS required 1300+, 3.8, 3.9 and numerous ECs to remain competitive.

***I’m being facetious here…but just barely.

I agree. The taxpayers fund these state universities. The instate kids should benefit.
