Financial Aid at Colgate

Has anyone heard anything new re finaid at Colgate in light of the success of the recent fundraising program which raised $480 million (more than the $400 mm initially sought) and did it six months earlier than planned? The ostensible reason for the fundraising, or one anyway, was to approach or make Colgate 'need blind' in admissions, but that hasn't happened yet (I do understand that the $480 mm, of which something like $140 mm was earmarked for finaid, may not yet be cash in the bank, with pledges and all). Any thoughts about this year of applications re how much less 'need aware' or 'need sensitive' Colgate may be in light of this very positive development? I'm terrified that if we apply, especially early, ie ED2, that any hint of needing finaid may be viewed negatively (we have had reverses, and will need substantial assistance, and are not an URM nor the first in family to go to college - just an ongoing victim of our nonexistent non-recession-recession). Any insights?

Excellent questions, “attydad.” Perhaps, these articles from the Colgate Scene and Colgate Connect may provide some insight ?

Has the Admission/Financial Aid Dept. been able to answer these questions in a way that makes you feel comfortable ? Pleas share.

Hi, I work in the Admission Office at Colgate. Great questions @attydad and great resources from the winter Scene, @gatetime! Of the $480+ million campaign, more than $140 million is now committed to financial aid for students, signaling Colgate’s commitment toward becoming need blind. We’re not there yet, President Herbst and Dean of Admission, Gary Ross, have made this a priority and the most recent campaign is among the first steps. You might be interested in the live Q&A tonight on Financial Aid with Vice President and Dean of Admission Gary Ross ‘77, along with Senior Associate Deans of Admission Karen Giannino and Lynn Holcomb tonight 8-9 p.m. EST.

I think that Q&A on Colgate Connect was one of the most informative pieces about FinAid I’ve ever read.
Kudos to Colgate for doing that and posting and thanks for for the link.

As an alum from four decades ago, I can still remember my own college research and investigation process. It appears to me that the Colgate Admissions/Financial Aid Depts. do a pretty good job of telling their story and being helpful to aspiring students and their families. I’m not as familiar with the experiences that aspiring students and families have with other schools’ Admissions/Financial Aid Depts. relative to their Colgate experience ?
Since GolfFather provoked my curiosity with his compliment on the Colgate Connect Q & A on Financial Aid, perhaps he and others would like to respond to this query ?

Gatetime, since my D is a junior we have not had any direct interactions with school finaid offices quite yet. We are still in the research stage.
