Financial Aid at Notre Dame

Hello. I was recently admitted into Notre Dame and was awarded 41,000 USD in aid under the name of “University Scholarship” for the 2019-2020 academic year. The cost of attendance for this year is around 74,000 USD. My estimated family contribution is going to be 10,000 USD for this year. That leaves around 33,000 K left. How could I ask for more financial aid? I applied to ND with a 1360 SAT and managed it to improve it to 1380 after the documents were due. They do not know about this recent score. Could this be used to try and ask for more aid without sounding overly persistent? Thank you for your time and any comments are welcome.

@jordansmith1103 The scholarship you received from Notre Dame is need-based financial aid, no merit scholarship, and therefore a subsequent change in your SAT score won’t have an impact. Give a call to the office of Financial Aid to understand how your financial need has been determined by Notre Dame. Need based financial aid of $41,000 is an substantial amount. Your FAFSA EFC has no immediate meaning as part of Notre Dame’s FAN, which is based on CSS profile information.

Are you a U.S. citizen? I’m only asking because you mention USD…which most domestic students wouldn’t mention when talking about money.

The award you got from ND was need based aid. Has anything about your finances changed since you filed your financial aid application forms?

When you say your estimated family contribution is $10,000…is that what your family has decided they can contribute? Because really…ND has placed your family contribution at the $33,000 mark…or so.

Please clarify.

I am US citizen currently residing in Colombia. And yes 10,000 USD is what my family has decided they can contribute.

$41K is a little less than Notre Dame’s average, but still very generous. It is worth asking for more aid, but recognize the chances are slim.

The family contribution calculated by the colleges is what they determine your family CAN pay per year based on the data from the FAFSA and Profile forms. Notre Dame is a Profile school…so the financial data on the Profile is what would be used to determine the awarding of ND need based aid.

With a family contribution of $33000 or so…your family probably has an annual income in the over $100,000 a year range…maybe a little less. And/or they have some significant assets.

Families are first in line to help pay college costs. Many families do find that the family contribution from some colleges is more than they can afford to pay each year.

If your family can pay $10,000 only a year, then what colleges on your acceptance list come in with a net cost of $10,000 a year.
