Financial aid at public schools

Just found out that financial aid packages (including scholarships) from public schools (Berkeley, UCLA, UIUC, UMichigan) are very poor. I am out of state so basically I need to pay out of pocket >$40k/year... making these schools unaffordable.

How many of you got good financial aid packages from public schools?

People with financial need who get low net prices at public schools would be those who:

are in-state for states which have good in-state financial aid (e.g. California) or low in-state prices.

attend University of Virginia or University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.

earn big merit scholarships like those listed in the sticky threads at the top of the financial aid and scholarships forum section.

attend low cost community colleges.

attend low cost schools like the ones in South Dakota.

are intended military officers at the service academies.
