Financial aid at Stevens

Need-based aid Financial Aid

Merit aid Financial Aid

You also have to fill out the CSS profile ($25 cost) and submit it by the due date according to when you are applying. That takes awhile to fill out so do not wait until the last minute.

Any specific questions?

Here is one. Does coming in top 25 percent help chances at a better merit aid package?

I have heard many different speakers mention several times that Stevens is generous with merit aid, but they don’t give numbers. Also, because Stevens is a small school, we don’t get a lot of posters coming here with stats and financial awards posts.

It would be interesting if people posted their award results here, but I understand people not wanting to post because it is a private matter.

At one session we were told that >90% of students receive some sort of financial aid. It would make sense that higher stats would result in higher merit awards.

No package yet…maybe tomorrow?!

Does anyone know when packages get announced?

painthorse your financial package should come with your acceptance, in the mail. For ED1, that should be today or tomorrow. It usually comes with your acceptance letter, but something happened this year and they called people instead of mailing by the acceptance date.

Please post when you get the acceptance package, so we know it is coming our way too. The info in that package should be very informative and is certainly important. It will make or break the dream of Stevens.

I just posted this in the Decision 2014 Forum:

Son got mail today confirming acceptance by coach on Sunday. He got $20,100 schloarship, $1000 work study, $5000 loan (not sure if we will take the loan).

He is a good student but not particularly excellent. SAT close to 2000, GPA 3.8, weighed 3.6 with APs in Calculus, Ecomonics, History, Computer, Physics. etc.

acfan1 - do you think he will attend? Was he top 25%? He sounds like an excellent student to me! Is that about what you were thinking/expecting?

Collegemom2018 - I think you are right. He is an excellent student but maybe not superior.

He will attend because he likes the school - small size, good campus environment, close to home and has a fencing team that he will join. He know a few former HS fencing teamates that are attending already. Not as expensive as other small private colleges considering the scholarship. He likes the co-op program and hope to get in.

Based on information from this forum, the scholarship is about what we are expecting. But with his sister already in private college at RISD and another one going to college in 4years, this a lot for us. But I guess this is what parents are for…

Do you mean top 25% of applicant or top 25% in his HS? No infomation on applicant ranking. His HS has not ranking but I am sure he is top 25%.

Do you mean $20,100 per year?

I think she means top 25% at Stevens. You will know because they invite you to 5 years Masters if you are top 25%. Top 10% gets offered Scholars Program, as I understand it. (it sounds like a lot of people until you remember that there are only about 600 students per class)

He is an athlete? I wonder if that influences package.

Thanks for posting acfan1.

btw anyone can do coop as long at their grades are ok, afaik.

yeah our mail didn’t come yet.

I have not read the acceptance letter (I am at work), my son just told me by phone. I will get more detail when I get home. The scholarship is per year.

My son is interested in the master program but he did not say anything about master program after receiving the letter. Could the school offer 5 year master program after all students are accepted from ED1, ED2 and RD? They don’t know who will be in the top 25% until then.

He is an athlete and talked to the coach. From what I know, NCAA Div III does not recruit. But I think it could influence something because the coach emailed my son that he is accepted on Sunday.

Hey I think 20k per year is a nice amount. Not sure about the Masters 5 year program. I asked for stats and the caller said ‘top 10% admitted Scholars and top 25% admitted 5 yr masters.’

I didn’t really question her further, but I am guessing you would have to complete a semester and maybe based on your grades you could reapply for those programs. I know that when my other son was offered a scholarship, they offered more people than they knew would accept. I think that is pretty common.

and no mail today here…I guess they are sending them out in batches; maybe the same as they called over a period of days - sounds like you got a nice offer ACfan and terrific you can make it happen for your son! Congrats!

Thank you collegemom2018 & rualum! Hope you receive the package soon.

I am home and confirmed that my son has no 5-year masters offer. He is happy. Hope he will study hard in college. Please let me know when you receive the package.

My son received his package today. It seems that CollegeMom has it right…they seem to be sending them out in batches. My son was called on Friday.

I received my package in the mail today. I was hoping for a little bit more in financial aid, but it seems like a fair amount. Although, I will have to convince my mother of that. I was invited to do the 4 + 1 Master’s Program, which I am ecstatic about :)

We were hoping for a little more in financial aid as well and there was no info about required GPA to keep the aid that was awarded. We are thinking about it. $64,000 a year is a big commitment.

I think the required GPA to keep your (Stevens merit) award is 3.2, but it can vary depending on the scholarship you are awarded.

According to Stevens’ website, the class of 2013 was composed of 612 students. “This year’s freshman class is the largest in the university’s history, coming from twenty-seven states and several foreign countries, and boasts a record number of women, which make up the 28 percent of the class.”

About 30 students each year (from what I have heard/read) are offered Neupauer awards of full tuition for 4 years (not room and board). There are other scholarships and awards of varying amounts that are offered as well; you would have to search the website for more information. I am not including financial need awards, only merit.

Most students who are offered a scholarship, according to what I have read, are offered Edwin A. Stevens scholarships. I am guessing that the average award for a top 25% student (top 25% at Stevens, not at your high school) is somewhere in the area of 15-20k per year, and it may be comprised of multiple scholarships. For example Edwin A. Stevens and the one for women engineers. Or Edwin A. Stevens and First. Or EAS and Performing Arts. Or EAS by itself.

They may also consider that an additional offer, such as Stevens Scholars or 4 + 1 Masters, is a perk with a value that may offset the amount of EAS you get. Scholars allows you to take classes for free during the summer, or offers a research opportunity with either paid housing or stipend for the summer. I am not sure what 4+1 offers.

But this is only speculation: I’m discussing it because there are always questions about how much Stevens typically awards, and there is not much to go by.

Feel free to comment on my observations/assumptions.
