Can anyone give me information about financial aid when you live at home? I know the cost of attendance is a lot less. Anyways I will be transferring next fall either to a CSU or UCLA if I can get in. I have an efc of 0 and I don't think it'll change anytime soon so it'll mean I will qualify for a Cal Grant B (I already received two years of the $1551 so I have two years left) and a Pell Grant of $5550 next school year. If nothing changes, I know Ill get the $12192(assuming tuition doesn't increase) and $1551 for Cal grant B and a $5550 in Pell grant money. The total comes out to be $19,293. The cost of attendance for a commuter student going to UCLA is $23,339. I know that when a person is a junior/senior, about $7000+ loans is a part of the FA package. My question is would they still put in 7000+ loans in someones financial aid package which lowers the amount a person receives in federal and state grants or would they just give you 19293 in grants?
I know I used the amount of the Cal grant for UCs but if you have experience at a CSU i would love to hear what your experience is! Thanks.

You would still get the 19,293 in grants. Your work study or loans would have a smaller balance.

I think you’ve made a mistake. The Blue and Gold promise INCLUDES Pell and Cal Grant. You don’t get those in addition to the cost of tuition. B&G is not a grant…it’s promise. The promise is that the combo of your grants…Pell, Cal Grants, and UC Grants will add up to UC tuition.

Several 0 EFC UC kids have posted their packages on CC and their packages are very similar…about $12-14k in grants (mix of Pell, CG, and UC), about $6-8K in loans (often with Perkins), about 2500 in work study.

So, if your COA is about $24k, then your pkg would be similar to above…

I don’t mean it as in addition to the cost of tuition. 19293 is just a number I got from adding up this year’s UC Cal grant B amount plus the pell grant amount. I know more than 12000 would go to paying tuition/fees. So the school would lower the amount of the grants so a student would receive about 12000-14000 total in grant money?

hmmm - My award showed the Pell Grant in addition to the blue and gold grants. Once they realized I was eligible for Cal grant, they replaced the uc grants with cal grant. The 1551 for cal grant b and the pell grant were still awarded on top.

Thanks jbourne! You are living at home and commuting to school? Financially living at home would probably be the best thing for me. I would love to live on campus or in an university apt, but if I live at home and get awarded a cal grant and a pell grant it would cover everything! Hmm maybe I could live on campus for one year. Did your package also include loans or work study? Anyways thanks! Also if you don’t mind me asking, which UC are you attending?

Yes, you get Pell is you qualify for Pell. However, that doesn’t mean that a student will get a grant or grant combo that equals “tuition”…AND also get Pell. The amount that equals “tuition” may include Pell. And, no grant is actually called “Blue and Gold”.

What are the amounts of each of your grants?

Cal Grant:______

Pell Grant:______

UC Grant:________

I’ve been searching through CC to find some answers! A post by Jordain had the same question I had and I think answers my question. The post is: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/903520-my-aid-drop-if-i-decide-commute-but-how-much-uci.html if you guys are interested in what was said in the discussion.
She was able to get an answer from someone at UCI and this is what Jordain said, “I spoke with an advisor today and he said they will drop my UCI grant and lower my student loans. Apparently Pell grants and Cal grants aren’t affected by housing.”

Thanks jbourne and mom2collegekids! I do appreciate your guys’ input as I have really no one to turn to about these questions.

angie - uc davis and no I am not a commuter. I think the off campus cost of
attendance is a few thousand less than on campus. Living at home would be
less still. I was offered loans, but
declined them. Also, it said I was eligible for work study, but didn’t
have a dollar amount associated with it. The ‘work study’ does not
show up anymore. When I called them, they said they only have
so much work study funds and it is first come first serve. So I was supposed
to find a job early in the summer (from their website) which I didn’t realize.
Once the funds are used up, the ‘work study’ disappears from the financial
aid page.

mom - I know it isn’t called blue and gold grant. It says I am ‘eligible for
the blue and gold opportunity plan’. and had various grants listed to
equal the tuition. I’m just trying to say that the pell grant was on top
of those other grants. Now that they have applied the cal grant,
this is what it says:

Estimated Financial Aid
Cal Grant B Stipend Ent. N-NH $1,551.00
Cal Grant B Fees Entitle N-NH $12,192.00
UCD Campus Fee Grant-NH $525.00
Federal Pell Grant Program-NH $2,800.00
Total Estimated Financial Aid $17,068.00

You got a great aid package.

All I was trying to say is that a UC doesn’t have to give grants to fill B&G and then also give Pell on top. They can use Pell to go towards B&G.

Not everyone qualifies for 2 Cal Grant B grants. And, I think if you’re a frosh, you can’t get much for Cal Grant B…but I’m not sure…the whole Cal Grant B gets confusing. I think one is actually competitive in some way.

Jbourne- Oh thats good to know about the FWS. I didn’t know there wasnt enough funds for everyone for received it on their package.

Mom2kidscollege- If your a freshmen you only get $1551, but the University makes it up with a school grant. When I received my UCR package in '09 as an incoming freshman I received $9300 in a UCR grant to pay for the fees and $1551 from cal grant. Then from soph year on Cal grant B starts to pay for tuition plus the living allowance.

for everyone who received*

Wow im making all kinds of mistakes today -_-
mom2collegekids*

Jbourne- do u work? Is it hard to pay for every thing without taking out loans?

I’m living on campus at a UC right now. Next year I was thinking about commuting, is it true I would still get cal grant A plus pell grant if I live off campus? Because grant A covers tuition and fees, so I would be getting surplurs money (pell grant) for books and transportation stuff right?

Well, mine has a surplus but according to some of the other posts above, not all packages give you the pell grant extra. i can only speak for my own.

UCI2015- I tried to find more information, but the best I found was the post by Jordain. She or he talked to a financial aid advisor at UCI and the advisor said housing doesnt affect pell and cal grant. FA would only reduce her UCI grant. I hope that helps. I also want to commute if it is cheaper, but I guess I will just have to wait until I get into the schools first! haha
