Financial Aid Award Letters

Hi I was wondering when financial aid award letters usually come from A&M…

@awesome7 After January. Be prepared for only loans. A lot of people mistakenly think of the word “aid” as money to offset cost of admissions. A&M is not generous with “aid” to offset cost of admission (NM commended with an earned internship as a Sr in high school and full time every summer, at a government contracted International Aerospace Engineering company, received 0 aid to offset cost of admissions).

There are scholarships that applicants are considered for (that are competitive) and scholarships you can apply for. https://scholarships.tamu.edu/

What is your intended major and did you stay in Calculus?

@Thelma2 Ok. Thank you!
…So with Aggie assurance is that loans or actual scholarship money?

My intended major is biochemistry.
I did stay in calculus but I will drop at the end of the semester as I am still struggling.

@awesome7 Aggie Assurance is not loans. It is made of scholarships and grants to meet tuition cost for eligible incoming freshmen students and only covers fall and spring semesters. No summer semesters. http://financialaid.tamu.edu/Aggie-Assurance

Tuition is the cost of classes and does not include fees, room and board, parking, sports pass, etc.

You will need to have some other type of financial aid (loans and scholarships, grants) to cover the other costs and the way I understand it is that the Aggie Assurance grant will cover the gap after all other loans/scholarships/grants are applied. All of this is determined by the university via your FAFSA. Be mindful of the deadlines http://financialaid.tamu.edu/News/3-Types-of-FAFSA-Deadlines-You-Should-Pay-Attentio

Don’t forget to look locally for scholarships. Our high schools’s counseling office puts out a list in February/March and they are awarded the first part of May. Also look to your local Aggie Mom’s club for their scholarship.

The regent scholars program is for first generation students with income under 40K http://scholarships.tamu.edu/Scholarship-Programs/Regents-Scholars#0-ProgramDetails

There are some scholarships that you will automatically be considered for through your apply Texas application and FAFSA

I asked about your calculus because if you were an engineering major, dropping calculus would affect your engineering admission decision most likely, as your final transcript will show it being a course you reported on your application as being taken Sr year. Engineering decisions consider heavily a students calculus readiness.

I was going to say that it depends on what your EFC is and if your FAFSA letter said that you would get a Pell Grant. I would assume if you are eligible for a Pell that you would get then ($6095) then if you are also eligible for Aggie Assurance you get the difference of Tuition minus the Pell. You will still need money for books, room and board, etc.

@Thelma2 Ok just double checking & yes I know it only covers tuition …I’m hoping to qualify for work-study for room & board, meals, etc.

@seniormom2000 Yes I should be eligible for Aggie Assurance but not quite for the Pell Grant.
