So I got $40,000 in aid from both Brown and JHU. Just a little background, I am the second child to go to college (my brother goes to MSU). My question is, next year at either JHU or Brown will my aid award fluctuate if our financial situation stays the same? Will my brother's aid amount change (at MSU we're basically paying his EFC which is around 14 k)?

This is very important because if next year the aid award significantly decreases I'll have to transfer elsewhere because I won't be able to afford it.

that is really a question you need to ask Brown and JHU.

Generally, your families EFC is divided between all students attending college. If your financial situation remains the same but your brother graduates from college and you do not have another sibling in college, your EFC will double.

Also -- FA packages generally have increasing amounts of loans for sophomores and juniors and seniors because they are eligible for larger stafford loans (juniors and seniors are eligible for $5500 and sophomores are eligible for $4500 while freshman are only eligible for $3500)

So my EFC for 2007-2008 was $7,700 and my brother's EFC for 2006-2007 was 14,000. How will this change? Should I assume my family's total EFC is 14,000 since my brother received this EFC when there was only one student in college?

it certainly looks like the family EFC is about $14,000 (it can vary based on differences in income and assets -- both students and parents).

so -- will your brother also be attending school in 2007-2008? if so, his EFC should be close to the $7700 amount that yours is (possibly slightly higher if he has income of his own).

Keep in mind that your brother's EFC may be lower this coming year, but his FA package may not increase much depending on how good MSU is with FA.

your package will remain similiar until your brother graduates and then your EFC will double (since your parents aren't paying for your brother)
