Financial Aid Awards

Financial aid awards are available on Buzzport.
Would love to hear what other OOS were awarded.

OOS (as you already know), but I either

A) Got nothing, or

B) Have not had my financial aid stuff posted

I’m hoping it’s B.

Damn…I hardly got anything. I just got the federal ones…does Georgia tech not have any need based scholarship for OOS!!! Or were they not included? I still havent submitted my verification of FAFSA form yet. Is it because of that?!

How much did other OOS students get?

That would be my assumption. We sent verification documents immediately and had communication with OSFA on numerous occasions to make sure they had everything they needed for the award.

I was quite shocked by the level of support we received. I’ll post it again:

1st year competitiveness Grant $1,000
Pell 5,550
Federal supplemental 2,000
Work Study 1,250
GT Scholarship for Undergrads 8,000

Not sure where the rest of the $$$ will come from (probably loans), but really trying to make it work.

Son has been in dual enrollment program for 2 years (junior and senior years of HS) and will enter GT as a Junior, so that should minimize costs.

He is also checking into the Co-op program to see how soon he can get into it.

I got no merit / scholarship dollars. They only offered a 6000 grant plus the federal loans without any work study. Guess Tech is no longer my #1 choice.

Still not avaialble, although…

Satisfied Requirements Completed Requirement Status Fund:
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) - Received and Satisfied
Ga Tech Application for Scholarships and Financial Aid - Received and Satisfied

Meh, site still says “All financial aid award notifications for on-time fall freshman applicants will be available by April 1.”

Edit: We’re OOS

My son is in state and received nothing. I do not understand what is going on with Tech’s financial aid. He received Hope and Pell, which we already knew he would get that so why did we have to wait until now to find out the obvious. No work study, no scholarships , no need based aid, no info about loans. What is going on?

Admissions posted that the awards will come out over the next few days.

He received HOPE. That covers 100% of tuition, mandatory fees, and even books. What more did you expect?

Many people would kill for a $6,000 grant. Did you expect a full ride?

Yes…G.P…He did receive HOPE and it does cover tuition but no it doesn’t cover the complete cost of books unless you are saying his books will only cost $300 a year. With that being said, he can get that exact same thing at any state school, so Ga Tech had to give this to him. With our income we thought he would be eligible for need based aid considering he has been at every other school he applied to. Also on Ga Tech’s financial aid and scholarship page there is a list of what looks like hundreds of available sources of scholarships from the school and he received nothing. I really didn’t expect such a rude response such as “what more did you expect” from you or anyone else. I did expect some type of aid from Tech and they gave nothing. Please do not refer to HOPE, that is not an award from Tech…again any state school would have to give him that. It is ok for people to be disappointed in there financial aid packages so why do you feel the need to attack. We are trying to find a way to offer our children the education they deserve and need and it is a huge disappointment finding out you can’t afford Tech even if we are in state. Again, I don’t understand the attack on us. Just like the person that received $6000 and you say what did you expect a full ride…maybe they did…maybe they need it. If this is the attitude of Tech as it seems you are representing them I am glad we can’t afford it.

The cost of books depends on where you buy them. If you purchase used copies online from places like abebooks.com, you can often find books for $5-$10 instead of $100-$150. Granted they’re international versions or older editions, but if money is tight, that is not a problem.

Which is fine. But the fact remains, Tech isn’t going to pay your child a salary to go to college. With HOPE, your child’s only expenses are food and housing, which are virtually nothing compared to the cost of tuition and fees.

This is incredibly generous for a top tier engineering research school. In fact, if you lived in any other state, he would very likely pay more for a lower quality education.

It was not a “rude response” - it was an actual inquiry. What did you expect? Did you want Tech to offer him a stipend to cover living expenses?

Georgia is paying everything other than living expenses, which your child would have to pay even if he wasn’t going to college.

I still do not understand how your child cannot afford Tech with no tuition or fees. Let’s assume your child doesn’t work, lives in dorms at $2400 / semester, and spends $600 per semester on a meal plan, that’s only $3000 per semester. After 8 semesters, that’s $24,000 in debt, which is not a lot for an engineering graduate. And that’s worst case.

But if money is an issue, you’ll want your son to Co-op. Co-ops earn about $9000 / semester after tax. Subtract about $4000 in living expenses while a Co-op, and that leaves him with $5,000 at the end of his Co-op semester. If he spends $3000 the next semester for food and living, that leaves him with $2000 in the bank.

And if that’s not enough, have him co-op and work 15 hours/week while in school. It’s easy to find a $10/hr job around campus, so in a semester, he can earn an extra $1800.

Again, I’m not attacking you, I just don’t see your point. Any one can easy afford Tech with HOPE, and if your income is sufficiently low, he’s guaranteed HOPE regardless of GPA. Help me understand where you have a problem.

I represent me, and me alone.

I agree with heltonmom, that rude response from GP was uncalled for. I did not expect a full ride either, but like you pointed out Tech has hundreds of scholarships available, endowments probably millions. To not offer any scholarship at all for someone who was in the running for the Presidential is kinda sad. No work study for a pell grant recipient, even more ridiculous. 6000 at Tech only covers one semester of room and board. I am very disappointed that I will not be able to attend Tech, but plan to make the best of my education somewhere I can afford. Going into debt for over $128000 just to get a degree from Tech is not worth it.

I have not seen a $600 meal plan for a whole semester and don’t think anyone can eat for $600 for that length of time…The Unlimited Plus 5
FE Cost: $1836 (includes $125 in BuzzFunds)
Voluntary Cost: $1836 (includes $125 in BuzzFunds

All prices are per semester

The Unlimited
FE Cost: $1626 (includes $125 in BuzzFunds)
Voluntary Cost: $1626 (includes $125 in BuzzFunds)

STANDARD DOUBLE ROOM WITH COMMUNITY RESTROOMS $2,555 per semester WEST CAMPUS:
EAST CAMPUS:
FOUR PERSON ROOMS (FOUR PERSONS, TWO ROOMS, ONE ENTRANCE) $2,452 per semester EAST CAMPUS:

I am not assuming my child will not work, I am not thinking my child deserves a free education, the fact of it is…I am not assuming anything…what I say about our aid or financial situation is fact…you are assuming what we can pay, assuming what I am thinking and assuming you know everything when you don’t even know what a meal plan cost…you do not know our income…but I am going to lower myself to your standards and assume you are a complete jerk…with plenty of money and no problems getting what you want…good for you and your family and your great paying job…have I assumed enough…or do you work or is your mom still supporting you and paying for your education.

I pulled the summer prices. [Summer Session 2010 Meal Plans | GT Buzzcard](http://www.buzzcard.gatech.edu/meal-plans/plans). It still doesn’t change the analysis much.

Nor am I. I gave you three options for a family contribution of $0, one included no work, one included Co-op, one included part-time employment and co-op.

I did not assume you could pay. I assumed no support whatsoever from you. He can take on the entire debt load if he decides not to work (and won’t have much trouble paying it off with an engineering degree) or he can work and graduate with money in the bank and no debt. No matter how little you make - he can go to Georgia Tech very easily.

My comments were simply explanations. You just resorted to a personal attack.

But if it makes you feel better, neither of my parents were living at the time I went to college, and I had no contribution from anyone at all. I lived in a state with no strong engineering program and went to Tech OOS. I worked while in school, and graduated with no debt and plenty in the bank to start my life.

You seem to just want to be antagonistic towards me. Any response other than “oh, I’m so sorry” is taken as an attack because it’s fixated in your mind that your son cannot afford Georgia Tech and you need more aid. The truth is, if you step back and take a look, it’s not that bad and it’s very easily “doable” for him, even if you contribute absolutely nothing.

I didn’t view your comments as rude or anything like that. Anyways…

I’m OOS and just received my Financial Aid award today. It’s $5000 for each semester (really excited I got it), but I was wondering one thing about it: would this be for four years/eight semesters (assuming my need is relatively the same the whole time)? It’s one of the scholarships listed on the website ([Georgia Institute of Technology :: Financial Aid :: Institutional Scholarships](<a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Financial Aid”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Financial Aid)).

Also, do many (non-co-op) students take 5 years to graduate? If that happened to me, I’m guessing that I would not be eligible for the money for the ninth and tenth semesters, correct?

You are going to want to contact the FinAid office about that. Some scholarships are one-year only, some scholarships are for all of college, including your 5th year.

If you look at the retention chart, about half of all GT graduates graduate in 4 years. Keep in mind, though, that Co-ops used to be pushed to 5 years automatically (no longer the case with the reduced number of work semesters), and non-engineers tend to have a lighter curriculum (120 hours instead of 132-142 hours).

Generally, if you don’t switch majors, it’s not that difficult to graduate in 4 years. If you switch majors, fail classes, take 12-15 hour semesters, etc. you will likely delay graduation.

Alright, thanks for the info.

Heltonmom, G.P Burdell is giving you insightful information about georgia tech. Be thankful for his willingness to help you. I wouldn’t go and pull out all that data for you even if I went to Tech for undergraduate. Stop putting your anger onto G.P Burdell for not being able to send your kid through college without more financial aid. There are many other OOS and international students who are paying way more than instate to cover the expenses for same education that your son will be having. I doubt you paid all the taxes within the state of Georgia to cover your son’s education like OOS and internation students.

For my question, as graduate student for Georgia Tech, how can one find GRA or GTA position? I am out of state student and doing computer science as master at Georgia Tech. Am I less likely to get GTA or GRA unless I am coming in as PhD student?

I am not putting my anger onto G.P. I, like everyone else only posted that I was disappointed my son didn’t receive more from Tech. I did not start attacking him the way he did me and others that had posted disappointment in their aid. He is not giving me insightful information and he is not trying to help me or anyone else. I am not angry, a little disappointed yes, but not angry. He has no reason to assume that I feel my son deserves free education. Why is he so angry? And I don’t want him to pull out any data for me. I already know what it cost for my son to attend Tech…housing, meals…everything. AGAIN…NOT ANGRY…DISAPPOINTED THAT HE CAN’T ATTEND…DO NOT NEED G.P. ATTACKING ME AND TELLING ME I SHOULD BE GLAD THAT MY SON WAS AWARDED HOPE AND PELL. MY POINT WAS, HE CAN GET THAT AT ANY STATE SCHOOL…I THOUGHT GA TECH SILL OFFERED NEED BASED AID…DO I NEED TO POST OUR INCOME FOR YOU OR G.P. TO UNDERSTAND THAT I WANT MY SON TO BE ABLE TO GET THE EDUCATION HE DESERVES BECAUSE HE HAS WORKED VERY HARD AND WE CAN’T AFFORD TO GIVE IT TO HIM. I DON’T WANT SOMETHING FOR NOTHING.JUST WAS HOPING FOR MORE AID. NOT ANGRY,PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT AND STOP ATTACKING ME. I KNOW SOME PEOPLE ARE GOING TO PAY MORE THAN ME FOR THEIR KIDS EDUCATION…AND I AM SO GLAD THEY CAN DO THAT. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THESE TYPE OF STATEMENTS ARE BEING MADE. HOW CAN YOU SAY I AM TAKING ANGER OUT ON GP BECAUSE OF ME NOT BEING ABLE TO SEND MY KID THROUGH COLLEGE. THIS IS NOT NECESSARY. SORRY I EVER MENTION FINANCIAL AID AND I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST.

csmajor5…And did you happen to read the post from several of us discussing our financial aid packages when GP jumped in with his comments. Not the last post when he wanted to sound like he was trying to be helpful. The attacking comments came from him before that. Read all of the post on the previous page. Why would he say to someone…what did you expect, a full ride…maybe they did…maybe they didn’t but does it really matter to him if they are not happy with their aid.

^ Calm down. You really need to calm down. GP is just a member like everyone else. And I have been following everything and I dont find it GP’s fault. I understand you are deeply hurt but you need to understand this is the internet. And this is a forum. If you will write stuff here, people will comment on it. If you don’t want people to comment on anything, don’t come here. Otherwise, appreciate it when others are trying to engage in a conversation.
And you really need to think about people who are so much unluckier than you are. There are children out there who work so hard but still cannot make it. I myself have an EFC of 0, and am a OOS. I hardly got anything. I dont think I will be able to go there coz I dont have even have a cosigner for private loans…
Anyways, I am sure, since your son got an admission to Georgia tech, he will definitely have a great life!
