Hi there,
I applied to 13 schools this year for undergraduate. Under the future plans section of the common app, I checked Plan to apply for financial aid. At the time I had planned on it but after going through the experience with my brother 3 years ago, we received no money so my parents decided not to apply this year. Do I contact the colleges and tell them I don't plan on applying for Finacial Aid or do I let the deadline pass with no consequences?

Since some schools are need-aware (meaning they take your financial need into consideration in deciding whether or not to admit you), you should send emails to all the schools letting them know you will NOT be applying for financial aid.

But, if your brother applied three years ago, that means that you and he will (at least briefly) be in college at the same time, possibly making you both eligible for financial aid. I’d suggest running the net price calculators at the schools you’re applying to, just to get an idea of whether you might be eligible for aid.

Thank you for the response. Do you recommend emailing the school admissions office or the financial aid office?

You contact the admissions office and let them know. Good luck with your applications! :)
