The school (U C Berkeley) has been giving me full financial aid the last two years, but I don't know how much they will pay me next year. I plan to move off-campus to live with my roommate next year. We just found an apartment that we would like to apply for renting. Each of us has to fill out an application, or having someone cosign. My parents are not making enough money to cosign for me in my application. Should I ask one of my relative to cosign? Is there other way?

You have two separate questions.

How much will Berkeley “give you” if you live off campus?

You need to ask the folks AT Berkeley this question. Most schools have a cost of attendance number that is different for those who live off campus. Sometimes it’s the same as on campus housing, sometimes lower…ask at Berkeley.

Who will cosign your lease for an off campus apartment?

You need to find out from the LANDLORD who would be an acceptable cosigner. I know when we did this for one of our kids, the landlord required it be a parent. BUT this might not be the case. Your landlord might not care as long. However, keep in mind that the cosigner on your lease would be responsible for paying the rent if you don’t. Make sure your relatives understand that. AND more important…find out what happens if your ROOMMATE moves out…would you be responsible for HER/HIS share of the rent in addition to your own?
