Financial Aid Custody

My grandma has had custody of me since I was three years old so i filled the financial aid papers as an independent but when I sent in the custody papers they told me that they needed guardianship papers instead and told me to file as a dependent of my grandma what should i do

Do as they say. And the financial info you submit for FAFSA and the school will be based on her income tax return where you should be listed as her dependent.

Is there a problem with your grandmother not wanting to contribute to your EFC for college? Have you calculated what that EFC should be?

I know there are cases where you can petition to be an independent–usually you have to be 24 years old–but I don’t know much about it sorry, and there has to be relevant circumstances. You might research that.

You do not use your grandma’s info on FAFSA unless she adopted you when you were young.

The school may be requiring you to use grandma’s info on CSS Profile, but they can’t require that her info be used on FAFSA. FAFSA is a federal form.

Was there are court order that gave your grandmother custody?

yes after my mom died she got custody of me

Unless your Grandma adopted you, you do not put her information on FAFSA. If the school is telling you to do that, they are completely wrong. The FAFSA instructions are quite specific about that.

Now if it is for the schools own financial aid, they can do what they want.
