I'm going to head towards UIUC, and I was going to fill out FAFSA, but because I wasn't sure which college to apply to before I didn't fill out the form. Now that I got all the decisions and I'm going, the deadline passed! What should I do? Is it worthless to apply anymore??

What were you thinking? The deadlines for financial aid applications have long passed for some forms of aid. You were supposed to apply for aid about the same time you sent in your applications, not after you got accepted! But what’s done is done.

Complete the FAFSA ASAP. By completing that, you will be eligible for a $5500 Direct Loan. If you are very low income family, you would get the Pell grant.

I sure hope you have discussed college finances with your parents, and they are able to pay the cost for you to attend UIUC. And I sure hope you are an instate student for Illinois.

Contact the UIUC financial aid office and ask - tomorrow, as soon as their office opens!

And I don’t understand the reasoning here. It costs nothing to submit FAFSA . . . so why would you not submit it as soon as you knew which schools you were applying to?

But, regardless the reason, get started on the FAFSA tonight - you’ll still be able to get federal direct loans, regardless of when it’s submitted. And maybe you’ll luck out with UIUC as well. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I’m not very informed… My parents are very uninformed and they don’t know about anything at all! I know it’s my responsibility but I had no idea what to do the whole time, and the only help my parents gave me was application fee money. But thanks anyway! If I apply late, will they grant me anything next year?

You are guaranteed a $5500 Direct Loan for the 2014-2015 school year.

UIUC does not meet full need anyway…that could be all you would have gotten if you had applied on time!

Can your parents help pay for college costs? It is unlikely that you will get a substantial amount of need based aid from UIUC.

Oh my gosh, thanks man. That makes me feel a lot better! My parents could pay but I’m not sure how much they can.

Before you commit to a college, you need to find out if your family can pay for you to attend…above that $5500 loan amount. And you will on,y be eligible for that loan IF you get the FAFSA done!

Are you in state or oos? If oos, it will cost you ~$48k per year.

Please do find out what your parents can pay. Here is a link to the page with information about cost of attendance. If your family can’t afford this with a student loan, then you need to decide if you want to take a gap year or go to a less expensive college/university this fall.
