I have read over some past threads about this mysterious financial aid email and the ultimate decisions, trying to find some correlation. A few days ago I received the email and was wondering if you guys did too and what your admission decision is in the end. The email essentially said they were missing some key financial aid documents.

One of the past threads on the topic: <a href=“Email Regarding Financial Aid = Good sign? - Dartmouth College - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/dartmouth-college/1465701-email-regarding-financial-aid-good-sign.html

I created an account just to respond to your post.

I also got a generic financial aid email asking for missing documents. The past forums hint at “good vibes” from these emails, but nothing seems certain.

So nervous. Comments by past applicants would be appreciated.

If you hear from Dartmouth, please post on this thread.

In past years, this email was sent in March. That would make more sense because the deadline for IDOC materials is March 1st. If we haven’t even reached the deadline yet, why would they email only some of us about missing material?

Your IDOC is supposed to be a complete package. If you submitted it but something is missing, it’s not really relevant that the deadline is later. A collateral consequence of the drop in applications may be that the college is able to look at these things earlier.

I did not get an email about financial aid. Frankly if this is a true indicator of acceptance, than I don’t want to attend an institution that plays this kind of game. There is a thing called likely letters for a reason. Sending out financial aid emails seems like a ridiculous and inane way of informing applicants of an admissions office decision. Of course this is probably all not an actual thing and people are reading into things things too deeply!

If you look at the past threads, I think you will find that your final sentence is probably accurate. Your analytical skills indicate that you will do well at whatever college you choose to attend. Let us hope that you have many choices and that one of them is Dartmouth. All the best, ATS

Beowulf7 did u receive a second financial aid email?

Yes, I did. The first was on Feb 15, the second on Feb 20. Dartmouth also emailed my father. I had a late CSS but it was submitted by Feb 20 so I’m assuming it hadn’t been processed yet.

What I’m thinking is why would Dartmouth care if I’ve already been rejected? I take this to mean either they haven’t reviewed my application yet, or I have been either accepted or waitlisted.

I received two. I also didn’t get a confirmation email when I sent my second update a few days ago, so I assume the decision has been made.

(When I sent my first update in January I immediately got a confirmation email saying it would be added to my file)

Perhaps they sent the email because GASP they needed your financial information? Although both offices work in conjunction with each other, they have separate processes due to the nature of need blind schools. Also, admissions committees (the classic raise your hand if you want this student accepted) at most top colleges are active until early march. Let’s all calm down.

My admission has been deferred from EA to RA. I’ve received two consecutive financial aid emails this week… (I’m a deferred candidate, but I’m very optimistic )

Update: I got a fourth, and this time personalized, email clarifying on a discrepancy.

Hmm…

Does your financial aid status for the IDOC stuff say “review in progress” or “received and satisfied”

@Beowulf7 That is definitely a good indication. My friend was also contacted by Dartmouth regarding a discrepancy last year. He was accepted~

We received notification from another one of the Ivies…and one of our documents hadn’t been downloaded yet even though it was submitted. I think that it could be an indication they are reviewing your app for financial aid because you are in the admit pile and things are missing, although I think that only students who had a missing document would be contacted. If everything was good…I am not so sure you would get the email simply because you were admitted?! I guess we will see soon…keep us posted…if nothing else, it is interesting…:)

^that is correct, at least based off of previous years. At all schools, not just Dartmouth, a personalized email (not generic) regarding clarification for financial aid documents is a good sign. If you search, almost every school has a thread on this, and in past years, applicants that posted have been accepted. However, this in no way means if you don’t get an email you aren’t accepted. It just means they have all of the information they need for a financial aid award. There are usually just a few people who post every year. Some have actually joked that they should have left off pertinent info so they would get contacted. Time will tell, but if history is correct, this is a positive sign.
