Financial Aid finally came out...

Uh... I guess its not the best the university is giving me a load of money for grants (since my dad only makes 38K and also supports 3 households (me, my brother, and themselves) in 3 different parts of the world... Also my bro also goto an expensive Ivy...

University Grant $31,401 $0
Federal Perkins Loan $2,380 $0
Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan $2,625 $0
Federal Work-Study $2,500 $0
Total Financial Aid
$38,906

The difference between your estimated cost of attendance (shown below) and your total financial aid eligibility is
$8,200

But the loan I would ultimately get each year would be...

2,380 + 2625 + 2500 + 8200... right? Gah holy ****... Its not bad as NYU but still... Now i'm going to have definate concerns.

Minus that by 3600 that my parents would get from church...

But too much loans. I don't know what to do...

That's a great package. What was your EFC?

Like around 0~3K... I don't know if they are really going to pay or not... but like i said, 38K isn't much for 2 students. Do you know if the loans I owe each year would actually be 8200 or 8200 AND the loans listed there? Because that would be around 13,000 a year... i'm gonna die..

OMG the university costs more than how much my dad makes a year... gahhhh

Well i guess its my own damn fault for not signing up in time for scholarship deadline in December. (which i unfortunately didn't know about until normal deadline came around) i know i wouldn't get anything, but i could've tried...

no the 2500 does not count as a loan. That's be work-study. You won't have to take it out as a loan, you'll have to work to pay it off. That's a good package. I would apply for some scholarhips. Assuming that after church you'd be stuck with around 7k, you could take that out in loans, and scholarships would also significantly reduce that number

HELP ON THIS...what scholarships are left to apply for???

www.fastweb.com

yeah i know 2500's not a loan but if i do not work it would be... I don't know if i can yet because i want to know how much workload i'll have before applying for a job.

I applied for some scholarships but i have no idea about it. (i don't even know how many of them i applied to...) I wish i could have signed up for USC scholarships because then least i could keep up with them. dang...

Hmm Can i see other people's Financial aid packages? I guess i got a pretty good deal. i'm just concerned about the loans i'll have in the end but 31.4K's a lot of money...@.@

Hi uyu!! I see you have gotten yours too. Mine's:

University Grant: $29,145 $0
University Scholarship: $4,000 $4,000
Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan: $1,200 $0
Unubsidized Federal Stafford Loan: $1,425 $0
Federal Work-Study: $2,500 $0
Total Financial Aid
$38,270

Dif = $8,836

My parent's EFC was $6,666 but my dad said he'll definitely cover the $8.8k...

I also suggest you take that work-study. It's better than taking out a loan. That $8.2k might be a problem for you...At you least you qualified for the Perkins Loan. I think my dad made a mistake during the FAFSA which made us ineligible for both Perkins and the Cal Grant...

Looks as if I'll have to take out a loan of $2,625.

Boo! So expensive!

University Grant: $10,783 $0
University Scholarship: $4,000 $4,000
Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan: $2,625 $0
Federal Work-Study: $2,500 $0
Total Financial Aid
$19,908

Dif = $27,198

Ouch.

23k. Got ripped off by 4k.

Yeah, looks like uyu got ripped a couple thousand too.

Yeah. I'm kinda doubting whether I should go now.

Estimated Cal Grant A $9,708
Estimated Federal Pell Grant $4,050
Federal SEOG Grant $1,200
University Grant $18,443
Federal Perkins Loan $3,380
Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan $2,625
Federal Work-Study $2,500
Total Financial Aid
$41,906

The difference between your estimated cost of attendance (shown below) and your total financial aid eligibility is
$5,200

Man, I get hella little Uni grant... I am supposed to get Cal grant B too but when I called the financial aid, they told me that even if i get Cal grant B, my Uni grant will go down $ for $. And my EFC is absolute 0. :( Should I go?

^ was pell grant included in USC's fin aid package? (like did they list it too?) i don't know if i'm getting any federal grant this year so i wanted to make sure...

yeah. that's the max you can get, may be that's why my uni grant is low I guess.

You are getting a heck of a great package! I will gladly trade my son's (he got $0 in financial aid) for yours! Get a job over the summer and part time during the school year - I'm sure you can manage!

Vagan, if you could work and save over the summer, that would help lower the amount you'd need to take out in loans...

My daughter is looking at a steeper loan scenario than yours to attend USC...the EFC numbers really aren't all that realistic for many people. (Our EFC is over 20% of our pre-tax income, and we're a family of 6 with a So. CA mortgage...eeeek!) She will have to weigh whether the potential positive tradeoffs at USC getting started in a career (i.e., USC has good internship programs, good name, etc.) would be worth it. (She is a Regent's Scholar at UCSB so she has a financially attractive alternative.) She may well be ready to be on her own after college, but we've told her that if she chooses, she may live at home for 2 years after graduation while working full-time and throw everything she makes at her loans and pay them off ASAP; we would consider that part of our contribution to paying for her education since we can't contribute as much cash as we'd like right now. That might be an option for some to consider.

Good luck!
