Financial Aid Flexibiliy at Syracuse

The financial aid/scholarship package is not nearly enough for my family to be able to afford it.

Does anyone know if SU its willing to give out more aid if you ask?

I am wondering the same thing. I received decent merit money from SU, but not as much as I did from other schools. I read on another thread that someone contacted the FA office( not SU’s) and told them they were also accepted into an Ivy League school and the office increased the award…but, I am nervous to do that. Does anyone out there have experience contacting the FA office for more merit aid? What did you say and did it work?

Anyone had any luck? i was accepted to whitman but received only 8k in loans. No merits/grants/ or scholarships.

same, i got accepted into whitman with around 8k in loans and a 3k success grant… i think i’ll have to end up passing syracuse up for now since going to my state school will be 2 1/2 times cheaper! but i still do love SU =) …please let us know if they give you anything after asking though! good luck

Last year I was accepted and didn’t receive the FA that I needed. I appealed my aid at every school I was accepted into and always received more money. My friend went from having 0 aid to 25 grand in grants to go to Boston College. It depends on your situation. If you feel ffafsa didn’t represent your family well enough tell them why… If other schools of similar or better rank offered you more… Tell them. Be honest and do not lie. They do have all your financial information on file. But the answer is yes… I would always recommend appealing for money because it always seems to work.

Give them numbers… They deal with formulas and need actual numbers

Don’t say we pay a lot for this

Tellll them

Best of luck!

@Nick,
did you send in a email or called it?

Thanks

Has anyone called SU’s financial aid office to try to get more aid?

I have. Went from 3.3K in university grant to 11.5K

Wow that’s a pretty big jump! Was it pretty easy to convince them to give you more aid?

I sent them a email and they replied saying i couldn’t receive any financial aid or something like that. Not sure how i’m going to pay off 52k if i plan on attending.

I sent them an appeal letter today I sent 2 days working on today…
if they don’t give me more money there is NO feasible way for me to attend Syracuse

has anyone been successful with an appeal letter?

I’ve heard miracles from certain schools… my friend went from 0 FA to 27 from Boston College

Know nothing about Syracuse willingness to drastically change their FA packages…

I’m not sure if it was easy. My dad (NCP) called and they wouldn’t tell him anything since he is the NCP, but they did notice some holes which would potentially increase my aid. They then talked to my mother, and bumped it to 11.5K.

I’m pretty sure they confused the custody situation and thought I was living with my dad and stepmom (over 150K combined income) rather than my mom (only around 35K from child support).

Why does Syracuse state on their web site they will help with “Meeting financial need” or “Increasing aid to middle-income families”, when in fact they do it by loans. Then Syracuse offers Planning for manageable debt. Syracuse should not post that try to meet need, or help the middle class when in fact they do not give enough straight out aid to attend. They give loans. I received better straight out aid from other schools who claim they do not have good aid. I am disappointed because Syracuse was my first choice, I thought they would work with me to attend and their FA office was not easy to work with.

I’m curious if any of the posters are actually now at SU. I’m reviewing the FA portion of their site and I also am interested in knowing if “the middle income families” talk is just talk. No kid needs loans disguised as aid these days and may impact my D’s application process. We have already eliminated a few colleges - getting in vs. the cost of applying and lack of aid.
Thoughts specifically on SU would be appreciated.
