Financial aid for a US Citizen Living Abroad

Yes, as a US citizen you will receive federal aid as long as you meet the conditions. Having a parent who pays taxes is NOT a condition.

the Federal FAFSA$ $ you may/ will receive is NOT going to be nearly enough to pay for ANY 4 year college in Illinois these days.The knowledgeable CC members who have responded to your post are TRYING to alert you to that fact.
You may have to re think your plans.

I am aware of that, we will be able to afford college after financial aid (if we get any that is), we have other ways, I will not get into that. My question has been answered now. Not that it really matters because I’m gonna know in a few months probably, I just wanted to know what other people think.

If your mom has not filed a U.S. tax return, she will need to complete a non-filers statement. This has to be requested from the IRS here.

The non-filers statement will give her the means to tell why she hasn’t filed.

If she was not required to file a tax return, then no problem.

However, if she was required to file, this might need to be done.

@kelsmom?
