Financial Aid for accepted Internationals at Cornell ED

I am still in total shock that I am gonna be attending Cornell University's Class of '15. If you're with me, my heartiest congratulations.

However, there's one sliight problem. Financial Aid. Cornell mailed me my Financial Aid Decision, which basically said "We can't give you any aid". This was totally unexpected, considering Cornell clearly states that they "only admit applicants whose need they can fulfill". Now I asked for 60% aid, but 20% would be enough. Unfortunately for me, Cornell says they have nothing. Zilch. Zero. Nada. Can you appeal for more aid, as an international student? Am I likely do get any at all? What about the Tata Scholarship? Where and how does that come in for an International like me?

Any help would be much more than appreciated. :D

Im still waiting for my packet to arrive…i guess it will arrive by monday or tuesday!! Why did they do this!!! cant understand a bit!! “no aid” ?? thats like unbelievable!!!

funkysatmonkey,
I’m in the exact same situation! I was accepted into CAS (I’m Canadian), but they said they couldn’t give any aid at all. Do you think appeals work?

FunkySATMonkey,
Sorry to tell you this, but I’m afraid you are mistaken.
Cornell is always need-blind toward international applicants, meaning that asking for financial aid will not jeopardise your chance of getting admitted. However, Cornell does not promise to meet full need. This is unlike Penn or Columbia which only admit students whose need they can fulfill. Applying for FA in such schools WILL jeopardise your chance of admission but they always give you full aid if you’re accepted.

What this means is that Cornell might accept an international student asking for FA, but they might give him partial or no FA at all. This has happened to my seniors (I’m international needing aid as well). 2 of my seniors could not attend Cornell even though Cornell has admitted them due to the lack of Financial Aid. And they said that it was very hard to negotiate with the FA office as the budget for international FA is very limited and must be shared amongst so many bright international students who need FA and are admitted. I’m not sure about the TATA scholarship.

As an evidence, please take a look at the following link: https://www.finaid.cornell.edu/finaid/upload/Financial-Aid-for-Undergraduate-International-Students.pdf.

Good luck and all the best! (: And oh by the way, did they send you your financial aid decision through airmail or e-mail?

@nbagga and @Funky
Hey, I got in COE at Cornell ED…
I am from Bangladesh and my EFC is USD 10,000
My case is similar to Funky’s. They said that they cannot provide me any aid at all. Funky, did u get reply to your e-mail of appeal yet? I didnt…
And nbagga, I am pretty sure dt u did get finaid, since u did nt receive any e-mail yet. Only d unfortunate ones received such ‘no aid’ e-mails. I got their official letter yesterday via FedEx. Lemme know any updates if possible…

Btw, I cant attend at all if they dont meet my full need…At best I can stretch my EFC to USD 15,000…thats it…I am so damn frustrated…huhhhhhhh

I got an email and an airmail. Basically, I’m getting no aid. I’ll still go though. I’ll have to live cheap, I guess. :P
