I'm helping my sister file for financial aid for her community college. She took a gap year and is starting school as a freshman now. She submitted FAFSA and stuff by the deadline but not the Cal Grant. It says online that you can submit by Sept. 2 if you're going to a CC? So, how does she do this? Does she ask her old high school to send in a verification form?

Also, all the tax worksheets and stuff were due April... My sister just signed up for this CC because another CC didn't really work out. Do you think it'd be okay to send it in now? I think she's calling in on monday to find out.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I think it means that she missed the deadline for the Cal grant. There are more than one type of grants you can qualify for on the fafsa, she probably missed the deadline for that one. For me, there’s like one grant left I can still qualify for (but to the best of my knowledge, I don’t qualify for it so it doesn’t matter) and then there’s the stafford loan.
Just fill out the fafa and the information will be sent to the school, which will probably send you something else in the mail if she’s already applied. or she can just go to the school’s financial aid office and ask any questions to them about it.

Cal Grant does not give tuition/fee assistance for CCCs. There is indeed a September 2 deadline for CCC students continuing at a CCC, but these awards are limited unlike the entitlement grants awarded for the March 2 deadline. If she had not missed the March 2 deadline and been awarded Cal Grant A, it would have automatically been placed in reserve until transfer regardless. Cal Grant B she would have had the option to receive the Access portion ($1,551/year), but this risks losing all eligibility if one does not transfer within two years. Cal Grant B is, in my opinion, better placed in reserve as well unless one knows for sure they will transfer within two years.

Yes, it was her high school that should have been requested to submit the GPA verification. At this point, however, she will be better off applying as she transfers (when the Transfer Entitlement window occurs). For that, the CCC must send the GPA verification.
