Financial aid for descendants of vets?

About 10 years ago, a family member told me there was scholarship money available for children, or grandchildren of veterans. The criteria were that there had to have been at least 2 parents or grandparents who were veterans and they both had to have served during war time. Discharge papers were required. My son is a senior in high school and we'd like to pursue this avenue for financial aide. His two grandfathers both served in the US Navy during WWII. I have done multiple web searches, and can't find any information on this particular scholarship or grant. Does anyone out there have any information that would help us find information on this opportunity? Thanks so much!

my brother is retired military- and because he has some hearing loss he was also classified as disabled.
The military qualifies his dependents for instate tuition, whether or not they actually graduated from that state, and the disability waived tuition for dependents as well in his state.
However, I have not heard of anything for grandchildren of veterans, unless they are a dependent of their grandparent.
Doesn't mean it isn't out there though- I would check with the units they served with.

Its also possible that 10 years ago there was something like that available, but like many things - it lost funding.

Thanks for the info. As you say, maybe it's lost funding. I have a vague memory that it was available through VFW or American Legion...but searching their websites has turned up nothing.

Thanks again for replying though.

You might want to check this list:
http://www.nextstudent.com/directory-of-scholarships/Military/Military-scholarships.aspx

Here's a Tailhook scholarship program that looks promising, since it gives over 50 scholarships for something like 280 applicants:
http://tailhook.net/Foundation%20Scholarship%20Info.html

And here's another list of military-related scholarships:
http://www.americanmilitaryspouse.org/resources/scholarship.htm
This list doesn't look like it has Navy-specific scholarships, but some of them are for all veterans. Not clear which ones are okay for grandchildren, so you'd have to check individually.

There are (or were) American Legion scholarships available to children & grandchildren of vets provided that the vet has active membership in a Legion Post. I believe it is a national program, but the applications have to go through the local Post.

I think the VFW has a similar system in place as well.

You may want to check with your local Legion or VFW post directly; your high school guidance office might also have information.
