hey guys, could you post what you are getting in grants from Columbia? just curious about Columbia's fiancial aid stuff. Thanks a lot for your responses!

No grant money at all. (:

Just loans.

oh... but is the loans quite a bit? like exceeds 10k per year?

Nope. They were under that. Oh, and I was granted work-study, too.

i see, thanks. hm anyone else help please..?

when you filled out the fafsa, it calculated what your parents expected contribution was. Columbia will typically give you financial aid to cover the difference between the cost of attending and this calculated expected contribution in this order:

Loans
Work Study
Grants

There is a limit to loans, there r two (Perkins and Staford, or something along those lines) and they each carry a limit, which is under 10k combined. If there is still a difference to be made up, they add work study which is at a max of 2500 i think and then the rest will be in grants.

The new rule they just made says that if your parents r making less than a certain amount, i think it was like 30k or 50k or something, then there wouldnt be any loans.

Bottom line though, i dont really see a point in your question since the amount of grants you get is directly related to your parents income and possessions and overall financial situation (like other children in college).

oh is it..? sorry I really dont know about the financial package thing. Since this year Cornell EDers seemed to get less than expected aid, and I am anxious about mine, so I just posted here to see how Columbians' packages went. k thanks a lot for all you guys' help!

Well, I'm extremely poor, according to colelge standards (eg. <20000 a year), and so I got all of it, pretty much. My student contribution was like 1600 or so, and I have to do work study, and that's it for me and my family. =)

And if you didn't know, Columbia now has a policy that if your family makes 50,000 a year and under, all loans will be replaced with institutional grants. That's why I decided to apply ED (and also the fact, of course, that Columbia is my dream school haha), and that's how I got like >45,000 in grants.

ohh Columbia is soo nice. Not too sure about Cornell yet.. I will see.. Thanks for your help!
