I can't recall how anxious I got about paying for school, and everytime I had doubts, I can always remember nan stepping in to say that Northwestern won't make it easy but will make it possible (personal experience with her daughter and NU). Anyhow, I'm extremely grateful that my appeal went through and there was an adjustment in my aid.

I know that financial for future years will probably remain relatively stable. Is that also the case if you had to appeal your first year (because if they continue to evaluate off the same figures you provide from FAFSA and PROFILE, wouldn't your aid be similar to what it was before appeal)? Do you have to appeal year after year with the same reasons? Personal experiences?

yea...i dont know...but i feel like no matter what they give you, you should ask questions/try to appeal....because you never know what they can do to help out. they've been pretty good to me...good thing, or i wouldn't be going there

Sneezy, I'm glad to hear it's working out for you! I don't know the answer to your question, though. Maybe you could stop by financial aid some time and ask them.

I would so love to know the answer to that question myself. My appeal also went through and they uped my aid....how will that work in future years?

NU financial aid is bad? There is a whole thread in this forum about how they don't divert any need-based aid away to merit aid.. so shouldn't their financial aid be good?

elsijfdl, it's hard to determine a school's finaid record based on a forum like this. People like to complain, and often feel they deserve more.

NU came through for my daughter with hefty financial aid, which is just enough to allow her to attend. NU is committed to meeting 100% of need, and graduating students without crippling debt loads. Their record shows graduates carry an average debt load of $16,000, which is reasonable for an education like NU has to offer.

NU's financial aid record was one of the reasons my daughter was allowed to apply ED. Sure, we're pinching pennies, but we are extremely grateful for the help they are giving us.

Just don't apply as a transfer...then you'll get all the aid in the world. Thanks to the $20,000 loan I just took out, I'm going into NU w/ very mixed emotions. Thank God my former college won't make me reapply. I don't know if a Northwestern degree is worth all of the debt it's going to put me in.

Um... so yeah, I wrote out a fat long appeal letter and I get a letter from the FA office today saying the appeal did go through. Yeah, they gave me $1000 more in loans. This is so retarded.

with my appeal, they told me to go screw myself...lol ...which was great to hear, seeing that my mom is unemployed and my dad had to give up his company because of heart problems. NU is just soo generous! ;)...and our EFC was 9,000 and APPROVED until NU changed it last minute after seeing the investment we put on our HOME....and then they go off saying that they don't expect us to sell our house, but they don't know what else to say. what i don't f ing understand is that my former school gave me both merit AND FINANCIAL aid (for which I qualified for), and Northwestern gives me jack ****. i'm going this semester...only because i can't pass up the opportunity, but if it's not worth the 25k i'm coughing up...i'll be kissing my "dream school" goodbye.

green...they seriously hate the transfers, unless you're coming from an Ivy - then u get tons of aid. r u still going to attend?

Yeah I'm attending, but seriously I'm not feeling good about this choice at all. This really is so jacked that they just obliviously slapped a $35,000 as our EFC when it clearly isn't even close.

that is EXACTLY what they did to me. changed my efc from 9k to 35k. like what the hell is that??? we'll create some sort of anti-northwestern financial aid fort in foster-walker
