financial aid for international student from china

hi all, i really need your help. i am an international student from china and i intend to study in the usa. however, if there's no financial aid awarded, surely i will not be able to go us to study.:( and since i heard from my seniors that this year's admission situation is really very scary, such that whoever applied financial aid is rejected by the university. i really really really want to go us to study. can you guys give me some suggestions about which colleges or universities really award financial aid for international students?thank you very much.

p.s.how about macalester and dickinson?

If I was you, I would have a long and hard think about WHY it is that you want to go to the US for study? Why not in China? What do you want to get out of from an education in the US?

The above is from the Dickinson College website.

It looks like MacCalaster does meet need but they also say that international students are required to submit a form documenting that they have the financial resources to attend.

You are right. Many schools that are need blind and meet 100% of need, are not need blind in admissions for international students. Those that are, comprise a very short list and the competition is fierce for those spots. Without near perfect stats, it is pretty much impossible to get into these schools, and they are lottery tickets for Americans too, in terms of admissions.

Most schools are not need blind in admissions, however. They just won’t give you the money unless you are tops on the list and you do have show that you have the money to support you when you come to the US as a student.

I suggest that you look at Momfromtexas’s thread of full ride scholarships. If you are an international student without money and do not have the top stats for the top schools, some of lesser known schools may be the way you can gain entry and have a paid education. You can also apply to the schools that have low chances of acceptances just in case, but do start your list bottom up in terms of selectivity and test scores.

The momfromtexas thread is one of my all time favorites…but to INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS be aware that many of the scholarships offered by the schools on her thread are for citizens/permanent residents. Check EACH college website to find out if they award financial aid to international students and if this is at the same rate as for others or at a reduced rate. Also very important to check to see if the schools are need aware for international students. If so, your financial need WILL be considered when your application is reviewed.

hi,Emeralds, in fact i am studying in singapore now(with full scholarship, though),so CHINESE education actually does not have much effect on me…
the problem for me is that i do not want to continue my university in singapore because it does not offer the course i want, which is also i want to pursue for my future career. and us is the best for this, namely international relations or political science:0

thumper1,thank you for your reply.
actually i looked through their websites for so many times already…lol…but i really don’t know if they will just reject the international students whoever applied for FA. it is really very scary.
p.s. i do not want to apply for full financial aid, maybe around 15k.

hi, cptofthehouse, thx for your suggestions.
seriously speaking, i do not want to apply for full financial aid, but maybe around 15k is enough for me. yet, if no FA, will also be definately impossible.
and sometimes, the schools does not offer stats for international students, what they give is merely “international students who demanstrate financial need can also apply.” it really does not mean anything!lol…

Thumper1, i know what you mean. just as what i said to cptofthehouse,

sometimes, the schools does not offer stats for international students, what they give is merely “international students who demanstrate financial need can also apply.” it really does not mean anything!lol…

When you apply for aid, the schools determine your aid needs…not you…for institutional aid. This is what you would be applying for as an international student.

When you complete the necessary finaid application forms, those NEED AWARE schools will review those along with your application for admission.

[International Students | Admissions - Berea College](http://www.berea.edu/admissions/international/default.asp)

You don’t apply for a “set amount”. You just apply for FA and submit all of your family’s financial info.

If your family says that it can pay all but $15k per year, it’s likely that the school will say that your family can pay for all of the costs.

You need to talk to your family. If they can truly only pay about $40k per year, then you’d be better off applying to some schools that are known to give good-sized merit scholarships to int’ls. if you were to get a half-tuition scholarship (about $17k per year), you’d be fine.

If you have not already done so, you need to read through everything at [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://www.educationusa.info/) Then you need to make an appointment with the counselors at the advising center in Singapore [EducationUSA - Center Profile - United States Education Information Center (USEIC)](http://www.educationusa.info/USEIC) These counselors are expert at helping students like you find places to study in the US. They will be able to tell which colleges and universities here have admitted students like you in the past few years, and whether or not those students have received enough financial aid.

You also should ask this question in the International Students Forum [International Students - College Confidential](International Students - College Confidential Forums) When you are reading through the threads there, look for anything written by b@r!um who is the resident expert on finding financial aid.

Wishing you all the best.

hi,

what i mean is that if the school can give me 15k as FA, i am fine with it. because i know my demonstrated amount will be definetely higher than this. and this is the bottom line i can accept.:(

hi susgeek, thank you very much!when i c the line, Berea College is the only school in the United States that provides 100% funding to 100% of enrolled international students for the first year of enrollment. " i am really really suprised! but i did not search anything for this school be4…i think i will take a deep consederations in it.

p.s. i just searched it, it seemes it does not have a very outstanding education since the cost of attendence is only 7000…and the quota for chinese is only one per a year.

hi mom2collegekids, just as what i said.

“what i mean is that if the school can give me 15k as FA, i am fine with it. because i know my demonstrated amount will be definetely higher than this. and this is the bottom line i can accept.”

sorry for the confusion caused.

p.s. btw, i actually intented to apply ED because i feel this will increase my chance of getting in the college i want with financial aid. is it true?

hi happymomof1,

it seems there are really a lot of things to do…lol…
but isnt it that i need to choose i school first then go and ask all those different agencies?

Marching, there are a number of more cost effective places to study for your discipline. Just one example would be UBC in Vancouver Canada at literally A FRACTION of the cost yet ALL THE RIGOR (sometimes much more!) of polysci/internation relations programs you would find in the U.S., especially at schools that might be likely to assist you. Using what criteria are you coming up with the $15k FA you seek? Eg. have you run financial aid calculators to hazard a guess at what (IF YOU WERE A PERMANENT RESIDENT) your minimum contribution would be?

First of all $15K in financial aid does not mean much except in context. Do you mean $15K at a school that costs $60k, $50K, 40K? Better you indicate what you are able to pay. You can put that on the fin aid forms when you apply for aid at the various schools.

“but isnt it that i need to choose i school first”

No. You need to define how much money you can afford to pay first.

Then you need to decide what you would like to study.

Then you need to go to the EducationUSA office with your school records, and talk with the counselors there about how to find colleges and universities that are likely to admit a student with your kind of school record into a program where you can study what it is that you want to study.

Then from that list of colleges and universities, you need to find out which ones can be made affordable for your family. That will be your list of places to apply to.

Do not just look at colleges and universities in the US. Most of the ones in Canada are less expensive. Some of the ones in Australia would work for you as well.
