*p.s. btw, i actually intented to apply ED because i feel this will increase my chance of getting in the college i want with financial aid. is it true?
*

NO one should apply ED unless they’re certain that they will get the FA that they need. And, you won’t be able to know that.

What schools are you considering?

It won’t matter at all. If you apply to a school that meets full need, you will get it (by the school’s computation) whether you apply ED or Regular decision.

If the school is need aware, your need for financial aid will be equally considered whether you apply ED or RD.

If you NEED money you are wise to be able to compare offers from multiple schools. Schools that award their INSTITUTIONAL aid use varying formulas for determining your actual need and parent contribution. The offers you get could vary by THOUSANDS of dollars…thousands.

kmcmom13,i dont know the system in canada, at all. so maybe i should consider this as one way also:) thx for your advise. roughly, the max my family can contribute for my university study is aroud 30k. so if im going to the LACs, which are almost 50k,I NEED 15K to 20K as FA…

cptofthehouse, just as what i said,

"roughly, the max my family can contribute for my university study is aroud 30k. so if im going to the LACs, which are almost 50k,I NEED 15K to 20K as FA… "

happymomof1, because the school period in singpore and US is different, i will only be able to talk to my school counselors who are in charge of all the overseas application and stuff after july. and this may not be effective for me because my only holiday be4 my application is June, and i need to start to prepare my application essays and personal statement. so…yah…things are quite complicated.

mom2collegekids, i am considering macalester college.

and i think i will be given the same opportunity in getting financial aid in ED as in RD because it stated in the webside that, the school will meet full demonstrated financial need.
and i feel it will increase my chance of getting in also:)

thumper1, i want to apply for ED simply because i want to have a greater chance of getting in. it is really very scary that all my senoirs, (the really brilliant ones, like SAT 2300+, extra activities have good record that kind) were rejected straightly if they applied FA in RD. and the only one, only, who got into the college, and of course, with FA, applied ED. so i want to do the same thing as her.

You should send a PM to fiona_ She is from Singapore, and may have some ideas for you. She has a couple of posts in this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/international-students/126244-singaporean-connection.html and elsewhere in the International Students Forum.

happymomof1,ok ok thxZ:)

Marching, 30K would be ample to cover UBC even at international fees. Vancouver is an expensive city in which to live, but it’s beautiful. Go check out info at [Welcome to The University of British Columbia - UBC.ca](http://www.ubc.ca/)

The top LACs cost closer to $60K a year these days than $50K. Again you need to know what the bottom line cost is that you can meet, not how much a school is going to give you.

You have $30K per year that your family can pay. Look for schools that cost about that amount. Look at Momfromtexas’s thread on full ride scholarships and change your search criteria that she has set to what yours are in terms of dollar amounts, your qualifications and that you are international.

Once you have that covered, apply away to whatever colleges you please. Be aware that if you turn down an ED school that disagrees with you as to what your family needs are, you can be blacklisted from other schools. ED means accepting their offer unless you can’t pay, but it is the school that makes that determination, not you. I know a lot of kids over the years in that quandry–getting it resolved when you live here is one thing, overseas…

As an international, many of the selective schools will not be needblind in admissions for you. These are all things you need to know. Go on ahead and pick your lottery tickets. But be aware of the chances and the facts, and always have a selection of schools where both admissions and cost are doable.

Otherwise, you will be posting next year like many kids here about being accepted and you can’t pay and can’t get a loan, and what can you do.
