Financial aid for International students

Hi. I am a student from India. I would be applying to the States, in 2015, planning to do Computer Science as my major and Applied Math as my minor. My SAT score is 2060. I would be requiring financial aid which should amount to roughly 90% of the total cost. Could someone please throw light on the colleges best for CS and where the required aid could be met?

$ for international students

Look here first for schools that offer good CS and financial aid to students from India (of which there is no shortage, of course) with a 2060. If I were you, I would do everything I could to raise that SAT in the next year. Many of the schools on these websites are some of the most selective schools in the country.

Thank you.
How much would an ideal SAT score be to get a 90% aid, in one of the good colleges like University of Chicago, Ohio State University etc.?

Above 2100. Overall the SAT itself wouldn’t be the only metrics. The issue is that most Indian applicants have super high stats and high need, so your essays (and, possibly, your extra curricular activities) would be what would distinguish you from the others. You’ll also have to apply to a wide variety of schools especially some where fewer Indian applicants apply.
Note: UChicago is roughly in the same class as the Ivy League. Ohio State is many steps below.

How much will your family pay? 10% tells us nothing.

If you’re saying that your parents will pay $6k for a $60,000 school, then getting accepted to a school that will give you that much is going to be extremely difficult for a student from India. Only the top and most competitive schools meet need for int’ls…so to even have a chance, your stats need to be top so you will get selected over all the other 2300+ SAT Indian students. Your country just has too many super-stat applicants.

So, the suggestion that a 1400 M+CR isn’t really high enough…unless your family will pay more. For instance, with a 1400 M+CR, then you could get a free tuition scholarship to some mid-tier and 3rd-tier schools…but your family would have to pay the other $17k to cover room, board, books, fees, insurance, travel and personal expenses.

This coming year, 2019, U Chicago will be super selective to all applicants, because they promise NO LOANs to any Financial Aid Package and they will meet needs to all admitted student, it is a policy change. In addition, U Chicago is not need blind for international students, so the more need you require the more selective they can be. I won’t be surprised that based on your need, the scores needed to get in must be Sky High, in addition to the essay and EC. You are competing with the top students from top HS in India and there are plenty of them.
