Financial aid for internationals?

Hi everyone,

I am an international applicant to US schools. Among some need blind schools for foreigners I am applying to Stanford, Cornell and Univ of Chicago.I will need a lot of finaid to attend if accepted. There are some organisations that help Armenians to study in the USA. BUT the colleges in turn say that applying for aid will put you at a disadvantage. well, I am not quoting them, but basically that is what it means. So, do the Admission officers mean that if you apply for aid it will be harder to get accepted. or do they mean that they might still accept you but without fin aid. As far as i am informed if the colleges see that they cannot help you financially they do not accept you. At least the UPENN web site clearly states so.

Thanks so much. i hope to get some constructive advice:)

I am sorry for such a long letter, I am just REALLY confused, the deadlines are drawing near ...........

According to Cornell, admissions is still need-blind for internationals but then they don’t give out a lot of FA. So you could be accepted and somehow have to find ways to pay for it.

But do you really believe them? Most people think it’s need-aware (despite what they say) and so it’s more competitive if you apply FA.

I do know of an Int’l student (from a us high school) who was accepted but did not get finaid - and when I inquired on his behalf - I was told to encourage him to seek finaid on his own - so if you need aid and think you can get it from other organizations - go for it!
just understand that it is not promised by Cornell to meet your need.

good luck!

Well Stanford explicitly states that it’s need-aware for international students who are applying for financial aid. i’m not sure about U Chicago though. And i’m an international student studying at a US High School and i just got accepted by Cornell Engineering ED 5 days ago. i did request for financial aid, but did not get it (they say that they’ll review my app for fin aid again in march amongst the regular applicants). My stats are decent, not great (SAT 2120, ACT 33, Math II 760, Chinese 800, Chem 800, Class rank 6/901), so i assume it’s my EC’s, Essays, and Recs that got me in. I think that at least for Cornell (not sure about others) it probably is need-blind as they say, because they had just recently transferred their funds meant for Canadians and Mexicans only to all international applicants. Besides, they can choose not to give you financial aid (like what happened to me). But i think as long as you’re confident and have good stats and everything else you should give it a shot, regardless of financial aid, because if your family income is not that much, and you have a strong app, you probably will be at least give some money provided you get in (my dad earns like a 100k USD a year, so that probably went against me as well).

^Umm… I imagine that they can’t be as tight on financial aid with International Eders since a lot of International Eders will back out then.

How are you going to afford Cornell if it’s like half of your family’s income? lol

Thnaks to all of you guys. I just talked to Stanford adm. officer and she clearly told me if they see that they cannot cover all your expenses they will not admit you with no finaid. i am SO happy it is not the same with Cornell.

My family’s annual income is some 10.000USD. So… I DO need a lot of finaid, but I could find it from the organisations I mentioned.

What college are you applying to?

Cornell is need blind (need aware) for US citizens (and PR), but not for internationals. They have limited fund for internations, which now includes Mexicans and Canadians now.

Hey guys,

I just thought about this; what if I apply for finaid and also include a letter that though the family’s financial situation is not good, i will be able to find funds from other sources too. I mean maybe this way they will see that they do not have to pay TOOO much for me???(((( Am I right???
