Financial aid for intl students.

i would like to attend the university of houston spring 2013 and will need help with finance, though i plan to apply for scholarships, i would also like to know how to get grants, loans, e.t.c

Not likely going to happen for a few reasons…

1) you’re an int’l and that’s a public school (publics generally do not give need-based aid to int’ls.).

2) Spring admits rarely get much for aid or merit scholarships. Some publics will give merit for int’ls for FALL admittance, but usually not for Spring admits.

3) you don’t qualify for any federal or state aid.

4) You can only get a loan if you have an American co-signer, which is really hard to get.

Okay, so to be able to apply for a financial aid it has to be private university? And fall admission?

It needs to be for Fall admission, and…

1) It needs to be one of FEW privates that give lots of aid to int’ls.

2) You need to QUALIFY for that aid, based on family income and assets.

3) Your family needs to pay what the school determines that your family should pay.

4) these schools often have VERY competitive admissions, so chances for admission are very, very low.

or

1) You need to apply to some publics and privates that give large merit to int’ls.

2) Your family can pay some costs.

3) You need to have qualifying stats.

can you please give a list of such in the southern and western region.

Read the international board here and use the search function. Most of the colleges that offer decent aid to internationals are highly selective and require high grades and scores. As an international needing aid you’ll most probably have to look at schools where your stats make you a star. If you’re from a country that sends lots of applicants to US colleges, it will be especially hard to get aid. The bottom line is that unless you’re an academic superstar, getting aid in the US is very tough.

To give you a proper list, we need…

Your country

Your test scores and GPA

Your intended major

How much your family will pay

You will also need to obtain a Visa to study in the us. You won’t be able work and you will need to prove to the gov’t you have the money I hand to pay for your travel, living, and school expenses before you get the Visa.

There is no one short list for this kind of information. You really do have to use the search engines to find colleges and universities that offer aid to internationals, and then check each website individually. Some places don’t offer any aid at all. Some offer only partial scholarships. Some offer only one or two scholarships, but really big ones. b@r!um who posts in the International Students Forum has written that she researched about 300 colleges and universities in order to find the ones that she finally applied to. If you send her a PM, she might be able to help you plan the best research strategy.

You also should spend time reading through the information at [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://educationusa.state.gov/) Then make an appointment with the counselors at the advising center closest to you. They are expert at helping students find good places to study in the US. They will be able to tell you which colleges and universities here have admitted students like you in the past few years and whether or not those students received any financial aid.

Wishing you all the best!

country: Nigeria
Test scores: havnt written yet
GPA: btwn 3.0-3.5 or so, not sure but not below 3.0
Major: computer science
how much were willing to pay…not sure but i think bout $10000 or less for tuition.

HYPM, Amherst, dartmouth.

wow okay you see the normal cost for these private colleges is that they cost double of public schools, so attending a public school is like an aid on its own, but is there a limit to the amount of aid granted by private schools?

Most privates don’t give ANY aid to int’ls.

Some have a policy to give a small amount to SOME int’ls that they admit (they’ll give no aid to the rest of the int’ls that they admit.)

Some have a policy to be “need aware” to int’ls and won’t admit some who need lots of aid.

A small number are need blind and will meet the determined need of every int’l that they admit…those are the hardest to get into. And, the SCHOOL determines the need, not the family.
