So as soon as we got S's acceptance, we submitted the FAFSA (as per the PSU instructions, we completed the 2007-2008 form to try and get aid for this summer, since he'll be doing the LEAP program).

We received a reply from PHEAA basically saying we were way too late to get any aid for 2007-2008. It really didn't surprise me, as I know the forms usually must be submitted in the spring of the prior school year.

I'm wondering, does anyone actually get financial aid for summer session as a freshman?

I would call PSU's financial aid office. I would imagine they would at least give you a Federally backed student or parent loan. We were at an accepted students program last week and a rep from the financial aid office told us specifically that if we wanted to be considered for financial aid for this summer program, we HAD to submit the 07-08 FAFSA (in addition to the 08-09 FAFSA for the fall).

I got the same letter in the mail from PHEAA a couple days ago. I took it to my college counselor and he told me not to worry about it, he said it was just basically making sure you didn’t accidently send in the 2007-2008 thinking it was 2008-2009, but he said if you did both FAFSA forms (08-09, and 07-08) it should be fine. Hopefully. =
