Financial aid for OOS transfer students?

I am currently a community college OOS student who is considering applying to Michigan State.

I am aware that the amount of financial aid that a transfer student can receive is on the low end of the spectrum, however, I am curious as to know if anyone has any personal experience with the amount of financial aid that OOS transfer students receive?

Do they have a tendency to receive little to no aid/ scholarships or is there a chance that applicants can receive a lot?

The government limits student loans to 27k for a bachelors degree. Anything over that requires parents to either cough up the difference minus the Pell grant, or co-sign private loans. The co-sign option is a VERY BAD IDEA. I would keep it in-state if that’s possible. If that’s not possible and money is a problem, private schools often have very flexible financial aid packages for students with need.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I have already applied to several of my instate schools and I do plan to stay if I am unable to afford going out of state.

I’m currently having second thoughts as to whether I should have a go with MSU…

Does MSU generally not offer a lot of scholarships to OOS students?

There wouldn’t be any merit scholarships for OOS transfer students (except perhaps some PTK) and no financial aid except for the basic federal aid you get through FAFSA.
You can email admissions and ask whether they have any sort of merit aid for transfers and in what amount (at best they may have 'waive possible surcharges type scholarship where you still have to pay for full cost at instate rate). But if you need full tuition or more there’s no point.
If you really want to go OOS, UMN Morris has no OOS surcharge and Truman State has good scholarships. Mizzou makes it easy for you to be considered instate the second year.

That’s unfortunate to hear :frowning: but I do understand considering that it is a state university haha.

Thank you very much for your suggestions and I’ll be sure to look into those schools as well!
