Hey guys.
Im a Marylander who just got his acceptance letter from UW - Madison. Although UMD is a great school , i have always wanted to go to UW.

However , my parents dont make that much money.... they are separated and my mom makes about 70k after taxes , and my dad just recently started paying child support ( about 1000 every month). I have a sibling ( 16)

2060 SAT and 3.5 uw gpa 4.4 WGPA... top high school in Montgomery county
Hispanic ( born and raised in Peru)
Eagle Scout

I know its hard to estimate what the university will give you, but does anyone have a very rough guess to the amount of fin aid they will award me? both need based and merit based.

I need some kind of hope that i will be able to afford my dream school.
Thanks

Most likely need based aid as UW gives very little merit aid, especially to freshmen. Hopefully you have applied for any scholarships you might be eligible for through your HS. Also your local UW alumni association.

I don’t know that being from Peru would put you in the recruited minority group. IF it did there might be money but that’s not my reading of the case. Most aid money for Hispanics goes to people of Puerto Rican or Mexican heritage. Don’t ask me to explain exactly why.

I’m confused because you say you are “born and raised in Peru” but obviously have been attending HS in MD, are you a US citizen?

US citizens of Peruvian descent are considered URMs, although as barrons states, they are not as sought after as MA & PR who are the most underrepresented Hispanics in college. URM status is not a factor in need based FA. It can be for merit aid, but the major URM scholarship at UW, the Chancellor’s/Powers-Knapp, is past the application deadline. I don’t know of any other URM merit scholarships at UW.
