financial aid for transfer students

I am in the process of filling out my transfer applications, I currently go to a CUNY school in NYC and receive financial aid, the schools that I am applying to as a transfer are NYU, Columbia, Cornell, and Harvard. I am confused by the process of applying for financial aid. The schools that I am applying to require me to fill out the CSS profile and FASFA again. I should preface that if I don’t get into any of the schools I plan on transferring to I will remain at my current school. If I fill out my FASFA for the other schools will I give up the aid I currently receive? And how does FASFA know that I am applying as a transfer to these schools?

When you complete the FAFSA this year, you will indicate the places that you want the information sent to. Your CUNY will get the data and so will all of the other places that you have indicated. Each institution will make up a financial aid plan for you based on that information. They do not communicate with each other. If you aren’t admitted anywhere as a transfer, your CUNY package won’t be affected.

The fafsa doesn’t ‘know’, or care, which school you are going to or applying to. You list all the schools, by code #, that you want the fafsa reports sent to.

Are you planning to transfer for January 2019? Or are you planning to transfer for fall 2019.

If you are transferring in January, you need to SUBMIT your 2018-2019 FAFSA and Profile forms to the school(s) you are applying to to transfer.

If you are applying for fall 2019, you need to submit the 2019-2020 FAFSA and Profile.

Please explain what you mean. Did you already submit the 2018-2019 or 2019-2020 forms to these schools?

@thumper1 I will be applying for fall 2019

So if admitted I would start class in the fall of 2019

I did not submit any form yet because most of my applications are due in March but I plan on filling them out at the end of my first semester

So…when you submit the Profile and FAFSA forms for 2019-2020, you can just put all of the schools on including your current one…and the ones you are applying to for transfer. Submit to them all.

That way, you will receive financial aid packages from all of them…if comparing is important.

You need to do the FAFSA anyway even if you stay at your current school.

Please…please don’t wait until the deadlines to get these done. These financial aid forms are up and running NOW. You will be using 2017 tax year information from those tax returns.

All of your transfer schools require the Profile.

Good luck.

I will say…NYU isn’t particularly generous with need based aid. They are even less generous with need based aid for transfer students…but you never know unless you try.
