As I'm narrowing my choices for college, I've been toying around with the idea of going to the UK for undergrad. I love the system most universities have set up there, with in-depth focus of 1 - 3 subjects and no GE requirements. There are several programs at the top UK universities that appeal to me.

However, before I get excited about them, I need to clarify what I predict to be a painful truth: there is very little or perhaps no financial aid for US students at UK universities, right? Unless one gets one of the few scholarships offered? I've read varying things on CC and on the websites, but if anyone can clarify, that'd be great!

Thanks for any info. :)

Each university’s website should have information about scholarships and aid for international applicants at that specific institution. If you cannot find any information at all at the university’s website about that topic, you need to email the admissions office and ask.

Some foreign universities are approved to participate in the Stafford Loan program. Check with the universities on your list and find out if they are.

If you are having difficulty finding all of the information that you need, get in touch with the Education Officer at the UK Consulate that is closest to where you live. That person should be able to help you find out more about higher education options in the UK.

You may be eligible to take out the usual stafford loans even while you attend a foreign university. To see if the school you are interested in qualifies go to the fafsa site
https://fafsa.ed.gov/FAFSA/app/schoolSearch?locale=en_EN
and select “foreign country” in the dropdown box (the state box). Click “search” and you’ll see a long list of schools. Lots of UK schools shown but there are surprising omissions (e.g. University of Manchester a prominent red-brick university in the north of England).

I take that back - its listed as the “Victoria University of Manchester” - you have to know a lot about UK University names to find it, so you may have to look carefully before discounting any colleges.
