When will be hearing about financial aid?

My kids heard about scholarships with their acceptance letters. The financial aid letter that totals up loans and scholarships comes about 3 weeks after the school receives your FAFSA.

Oh I sent my FAFSA in a long time ago…& I heard back a month ago, but no financial aid notification

i’m guessing probably in a couple of weeks.

I got my fin aid letter today. hehe.

my daughter got her FA package today. meh, no grants from UB.

Did any other lower income student not get work study in their fin aid package? What is this…

Compared to other colleges I’ve heard from, their fin aid is pretty low. I guess it’s because the OOS tuition is really cheap.

I’m a low income student and I received my financial aid letter a few days ago, no work study either.

All I got was the Pell and TAP. That leaves me $10K per year to cover on my own. My EFC was 0. What the hell is this?

I didn’t receive work study either.
However I did get grants, TAP and loans that add up to over 17k

Work study???
It may be a benefit not to get it!!

Work study limits your earnings. When you reach the amount you have to quit your job. (At least that’s the way it was when I was in school.) If you are not on “work study” just apply for jobs on or off campus. Earn what you can or need to… without a maximum limit.

When I was in school I worked at the campus bookstore, cafeteria, Hockey and Football concession stands (at Big Ten School- rah, rah), and held off campus jobs at restaurants. North campus- most convenient to work on premises. South campus- on or off campus.

thatguy, did you file your FAFSA by UB’s priority deadline? That is strange, but I seem to remember getting several revisions to the FA letter from UB last year. I would call or email the FA office and ask them specifically about grants such as FSEOG and SUSTA - they probably won’t be much but even $1-2k will help! You can also ask about work study and Perkins loans. Not sure what’s going on with the work study awards this year - my D was offered $1400 WS last year but ended up not using it. Also, if you’re academically qualified for an ACG, that will not show up on your FA award until summer as they have to individually verify your coursework. They will send out revised FA letters when they make changes.

I’m confused how a full Pell ($5500) and full TAP ($4900) would leave you with a $10K balance. I don’t think the COA is that high to begin with but you should also realize that some of that expense is within your control. Back out the variable costs like books, transportation, and personal expenses and replace them with estimates that are reasonable for your situation. You can request a triple or quad, which is less expensive than the standard double, and/or choose a smaller meal plan (the gold one is really overkill unless you’re going to get up early enough to eat breakfast). The dining halls are not open for lunch and students can only use meal swipes at certain venues on the spine. So it may work well to choose a smaller plan and put the savings into dining dollars or campus cash accounts, especially if you like to have more food choices. Anyway, the point is that by looking in detail at what the costs are, you can find ways to trim them…good luck!
