Financial aid granted per EFC

In regards to anybody who's already received their financial aid statement from certain UC's...

Could you please post your (1)EFC, (2)the amount of grants/loans/etc that you were given, (3)the college from which you received the awards from, and (4)anything else that you may find informative.

I have yet to hear back from any of the UC's yet, and i would just like to get a feel for the amount of grants that others are getting for their perspective EFC scores.

efc = 891

17k financial aid with possible 7788k in cal grant

ucsb

efc = 891

14k

ucsd

efc=2432

Pell Grant 2.9k, UC grant 10k from UCI
Pell grant same as above, 8.7K scholarship from UCD, 5.5K loans available

And I don’t have CalGrant simply because I missed the deadline

^^ how do you know how much you received from cal grants??

Total UCI cost: $24,930.50

  • “Gift” Aid: $20,030.00
    = My net cost: $4,900.50

^bump on the question above

efc = 2619

$13,267 w/no mention of CalGrant, which i definitely qualify for.

ucsb

$1,900 federal work-study / $5,000 subsidized loan / + remainder other loans

it’s kinda useless information if you lump grants and loans together… everyone will get loans…

break down like this:

School

EFC (parents, yours or both)

Loans

Grants

Scholarships

Here’s mine:

UCSB

$20,000 (wife and I, no parental)

$12,500 in Stafford loans

$0 Grants

$0 Scholarships

Columbia

$20,000 (wife and I, no parental)

$12,500 in Stafford loans

$0 Grants

$8400 Scholarships

EFC (mine) = 18k
Grants (Gift Aid) = 7500 from UCSD
Loans = 0 Paying the rest on my own

I’ve only seen my financial aid award from UCSD. Still waiting on UCLA and UCI.

UCD

Parents EFC-729

$0 (Won’t need to get any.)

$23,000+ Gift Aid. (Included CalGrant A, Pell Grant, etc, etc.-same for below as well).

Work-study! (Still have Scholarships I can apply for if I decide to go there.)

UCI

$0

$19,000+ Gift Aid.

Work-study to pay for the rest.

UCSD

$0

$20,000 Gift Aid.

Work-study.

How are you guys getting all of this information?? I have my EFC, but I havent gotten any Calgrant or other infromation.

^
Uhh…once you get your FA letter from the UC that accepted you…it should tell you your gift aid, what amount in loans you need…etc.

Your EFC was 18k and you still received $7500 from UCSD abby? I thought anything above 10k was pretty high. I guess that gives me some hope with my current EFC.

Right now my EFC is about 11,000. But my dad got laid off of work about 5 months ago, so it should be a lot lower. Unfortunately, he lost his job like right before I filed all of my FAFSA info…so i was unable to indicate the loss of income on the form.

With my families new circumstances my estimated EFC is around 1,900. So i sent in an updated FAFSA form http://faoforms.ucsd.edu/forms/8lossinc.pdf</a> to UCSD, and hopefully this will grant me a little extra $$ in aids.

Are UC’s generally understanding in circumstances like this?

^
I’m going to appeal for my FA if I decide to go to UCSD, because both of my parents are out of jobs, they got laid off…and yeah…they support my two older brothers and me…

Yes they are taking appeals for FA, especially since people have been laid off, etc.

Best of luck. [:

Hi Lakerfan,

I guess the way they calculated it was:

Total UCSD Cost = $25k - $18k = $7k in Gift Aid

I’m not sure if it was due to my gpa or because I’m independent but that’s what they gave me. I’m a bit surprised I got anything at all because I thought I made too much to qualify for any sort of aid.

Since your family experienced special circumstances, you should contact the financial aid office to have them re-evaluate your aid. The following is a posting from the UCs:

What if my financial situation has changed since I filed my FAFSA?

If your family income will change for the coming year, you may request a Special Circumstances or Unusual Circumstances application in the Financial Aid Office after you file your FAFSA and complete all of your documentation. Based upon the information you provide, the Financial Aid staff may use estimated income to determine eligibility for programs. In addition, your family’s Adjusted Gross Income can also be reduced because of unusual medical expenses, K-12 school tuition costs, the support of an extended family member that does not reside with the family, or unusual debt related to a bankruptcy, adoption, divorce, etc.

Hope this helps. Good luck!!

is University of California Grant the same as Cal Grant?

if not, why don’t i see any mention of Cal Grant on my UCSB award summary?
anyone else know that they qualify and not see Cal Grant on theirs?

Yes, that is the Calgrant.

Hmmm. I don’t know. I think you have to be a California Resident to get it. I didn’t apply for it because I stupidly missed the deadline…

Anyway, here’s a link: [California Financial Aid, College Grant, Financial Aid Grants for College: Calgrants.org](http://www.calgrants.org/)

It may help answer some of your questions; I have some questions myself as well!

well, the max Cal Grant award is $9,700… my 'University of California Grant is > $10k.

explain that!

When I go to the CSAC website, it says my Calgrant application is still pending and I didn’t receive it any on my fin aid package.

I called CSAC and they said they would process it during the summer…but it seems like a lot of people have already gotten a Cal Grant…

After you guys received your acceptance letter, how long was it before you got your fin aid letter?

I keep updating my Fafsa because 1) i decided to live on campus 2) I decided to do workstudy and 3) i took all the other UCs off my school choice list. Would that be why fin aid letter is taking so long?

When is the right time to start applying for loans?

Sakurax, how did you get so much gift aid at ucsd?

My efc is zero and I only got about 15g
