Is there anybody you guys know of to help me get the needed money from Penn when they reevaluate my financial info and maybe to help with merit scholarships?
Penn doesn’t offer merit scholarships.
Does Penn have merit scholarships?
Are you talking about University of Pennsylvania? It’s an Ivy League school. They don’t offer a penny in merit aid. Need based aid only.
Do you have any changes or additional information that was not on your original financial aid forms? If there isn’t any additional or,changed information, what is the basis of your request for reconsideration of your aid?
Is this for a ED acceptance?
I meant help me in completing my financial aid reevaluating form to Penn, where I was accepted. And then if that does not work help me find other merit scholarships outside of Penn.
So if you were already accepted to Penn, this is an early decision acceptance.
My questions are the same…
- What NEW financial information do you have to present to Penn that was not on your financial aid application form? Did someone lose a job? Did someone incur huge medical expenses? Did your house burn down with no insurance? Seriously...what financially has changed since you submitted the Profile?
- What is the basis for asking for a reconsideration of your aid?
- New question...how much more do you need? $2000 or $20,000?
- What is your family income? Did you run a net price calculator before applying early to Penn?
??
You were accepted to Wharton in DECEMBER and you paid your enrollment deposit…and withdrew acceptances.
Are you saying that you knew that you weren’t getting enough aid, but you deposited ANYWAY???
Isn’t it a little late to be appealing financial aid? You already acceoted yournED offer of admission, and sent in your deposit. And withdrew your other applications.
If you receive any outside merit scholarships (which is unlikely at this point), UPenn will just subtract those from the aid that was awarded.
How MUCH aid did Penn award you?
Why did you deposit if you can’t afford it?
Can your parents help you?
How were you thinking that random people on the internet could help you fill out an appeal form and or find money for you?
^^How are people supposed to find these? How will you find these when competing with thousands of students who all need money??? The best scholarships and significant amounts come from the individual schools.
Why did you accept the admission when you knew you didn’t have enough funding???
You might be able to get some local scholarships for your freshman year. Ask at your high school about applying for these.
BUT…and it’s a big BUT…these are almost always not renewable and are for smaller amounts. It’s way too late to apply for outside scholarships with significant dollars attached to them…that are renewable for four years.
So…even IF you get enough to pay for this year…what will you do for years 2, 3, and 4.
Most of those outside scholarships are for entering freshman only.
Your story seems to have some holes. Your parents and you agreed to an ED application to Penn. when your acceptance and your insufficient financial aid package arrived, you all agreed you should accept the offer of admission, mand withdraw all your other applications…despite the financial question.
Are you just looking for a little more money to ease the burden…or is this school not affordable for your family?
If it’s unaffordable, contact Penn, explain that you are not able to afford their school, and need to withdraw your acceptance to them.
You can either apply to your instate public university (is that affordable?). Or you can take a gap year, mand apply again for admission in 2017…choosing schools that are more affordable, mand NOT applying ED so you can compare net costs.
Far too late to be looking for outside scholarships. And even if you had started back in August when you should have, there’s never any guarantees. Especially not for significant and renewable amounts (if I hadn’t gotten lucky and been awarded some of a v competitive national awards, I would’ve ended with $7500 in outside scholarship money only… after about 150 applications).
too late for seniors.
But juniors…take note…start looking NOW!
Hate to say this but outside scholarships is going to do little to help your cause of reducing the amount of money you will have to come up with to pay Penn if you need a large amount of money.
Penn’s Policy regarding outside scholarships
In short, any outside scholarships will reduce your summer earnings, work study and any federal loans.
After that, Penn will reduce their grants.
If you are looking to reduce your parent’s EFC, you would have to get scholarships that first cover all of your self help package and the school’s institutional aid before your parent’s EFC is reduced.
This student immediately paid his deposit and withdrew all of his other apps immediately…long before getting/seeking adequate aid.
**Future high school seniors take note: ** Do NOT deposit or withdraw other applications until you and your PARENTS have reviewed the FA pkg and have deemed it adequate. We know that it’s exciting to get an ED acceptance, particularly to a top program, and you’ll feel the desire to immediately deposit, but wait. There’s no need to fear that the school will magically withdraw their acceptance just because you didn’t have a hair-trigger response and deposit. Schools KNOW that you have to review your aid pkg, and perhaps appeal. Please do not be headstrong and think, “I’m going, no matter what!” The fact is that if the money isn’t there, you won’t be going.
There’s a very good chance that this student will either have to do a gap year and reapply, ask UPenn if he can delay enrollment for a year if family just needs a little time, or find a school that now will give him enough merit.
