I read an article recently that recommended high school students go out and buy a self help book that enables you to win financial aid and fill out FAFSA forms correctly. When I looked into them I found a ton of books that claimed that they could help me to save thousands of dollars every year in school by doing just a few simple things, I even found 1 published by the Princeton Review. Are these books any help in getting financial aid or are they a bunch of lies? Also I am a rising senior, so is it too late for me to think about looking around to try and get as much financial aid for college as possible?
Thanks

Let’s just say they have an interesting in selling their books (though I understand Paying for College without Going Broke is pretty good). Keep reading this site for information. I think it will be more useful. You can get directions on filing the FAFSA from the FAFSA site.

Paying for College Without Going Broke is excellent - I recommend reading it cover-to-cover. Pay attention to the advice on choosing your college list. Picking colleges you can afford, and colleges that will offer the best aid to a student with your profile are very important.

I thought I knew a lot, but Paying for College… was an excellent resource for us too. I wish I had read it before my son’s senior year! I checked it out of the library, so keep that in mind as an option if you’re trying to save $.

I agree with others that Paying for College is worth a read. You can definitely find most of the info you need on the web, it’s just a question of how much research you want to do vs. having it laid out in front of you. I often refer to and recommend this site as well - tons of info and very searchable:

Don’t Miss Out by Octameron Press is another one that is very good.

In the off chance that your student is a scholar-athlete, I absolutely recommend The Sport Scholarships Insider’s Guide by Dion Wheeler. This is very, very valuable for anyone interested in DIII sports! Priceless.
