I was trying to fill out the FAfsa and am completely clueless on what to put down. Due to the economy my mother lost her job as a nurse and then we lost our home to foreclosure. My Efc was orginally 19,500 but my parents did not contribute to my education. Now that there is no income besides unemployment she gets. I do not live with them anymore and they do not help me with my current school finances.

Since I am 19 I am no longer able to get benefits from the government to help me pay for school. I do not know if I am considered and independent or a dependent? It does state if I am homeless(which i am) and the only form of housing is at my school dorm.

They do not just accept that you are homeless based on your say so. You have to show the school that you received an official determination from specific organizations (such as HUD, your high school when you were still in high school, the director of a runaway homeless shelter etc) that you are an Unaccompanied Homeless Youth. You can’t just say you are homeless. Talk to your FA director. It does not sound to me like you would qualify as homeless (at 19 not living with your parents and not being financially supported by them is not at all unusual). Talk to your FA department to find out for sure.
