I am at lost with the financial forms. My mother can't speak English well and does not know how to use the computer at all. Therefore, I will have to fill it out myself and ask for whatever information I need from her.

But my situation is somewhat unusual. My father lives in Hong Kong where he is a teacher. He only visits occasionally (maybe 3 times a year). How would I produce tax forms concerning his salary? How do I list my father in the application? My parents are not divorced nor officially separated. He just didn't immigrate to the United States with us because he loved Hong Kong and his school too much (I supposed). Recently, he had his green card taken away and he is trying to apply for a visa right now. I am not sure about the details.

Mom, however, does have a job. She is a lunch lady at a nearby middle school just so she won't be bored at home and she likes her boss and the people she worked with. Her salary is obviously not enough to support her three children in a suburban town.

Do I include my father in my financial aid forms? How do it? What about the W-2(?) forms needed?

I am really worry about this especially I am applying to two private (Cornell and NYU, yes I know NYU has very stingy financial aid). Money is a problem especially I have a younger sister (9) to put through college and my older brother is not much of a help.

Help would be much appreciated.

Ask the colleges for advice on the forms. Also ask your guidance counselor.

NYU is well known for NOT being generous with financial aid. I have seen people posting on College Confidential who got thousands of dollars less than their documented financial need.

Are you a U.S. citizen? If you are not, that means that your financial aid possibilities are even more limited because many U.S. colleges either don't provide $ to international students or provide money, but international students have to be exceptionally stellar to qualify.

Also check the financial aid forum of College Confidential.

I am pretty disappointed with NYU's reputation for financial aid but I still going to apply and "try my luck".

I am a US citizen and I have lived in United States for 8 years (since fourth grade). My mother took the test couple months ago and passed (after hours of drilling her).

It is very difficult to schedule anytime with my counselor since I have five AP classes and the counseloring office doesn't like taking kids out of AP classes (despite the fact that it really doesn't matter). But I will try.

Thanks for the reply.

Check to see if your school has someone who comes in to help low income kids fill out the financial forms. There is a guy who is paid by grant money to come in to our local high school one afternoon a week. He'll help anyone with the forms, even if you are not low income.

One place to find lots of good information about the financial aid process is www.finaid.org and another is the CSS website, for info about the Profile form.

I am totally clueless about how to report your father's income without W-2's, but the individual college's financial aid offices will help you sort it out. Hope you can find time!
